Dharmapuri ( Tamil : தர்மபுரி Tarmapuri [ ˈd̪aɾməpuɾi ]) is a city in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . It is located in the northern interior. The next largest cities are Salem 68 kilometers south and Bangalore 138 kilometers north. The population is around 69,000 (2011 census).

Dharmapuri is the capital of the district of the same name and the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dharmapuri . The national highway NH 7 runs through the city , which is the longest highway in India and connects Varanasi with Kanyakumari . Dharmapuri is connected to the railway network through the narrow-gauge line from Salem to Bangalore.

89 percent of the population of Dharmapuri are Hindus , 10 percent Muslim and 1 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 77 percent of the population as their mother tongue. Eleven percent speak Telugu , 9 percent speak Urdu, and 3 percent speak Kannada .
