history

The idea of founding the association came up in November 1964 at a meeting of western painters Charlie Dye , John Hampton and Joe Beeler in the Mexican state of Sonora . Initial founding talks took place on June 23, 1965 at the Oak Creek Tavern in Sedona , Arizona . The bar is now called the Cowboy Club . In addition to, Dye and Hampton, George Phippen and the Wild West writer Robert MacLeod were also present. Fred Harman , also known under the pseudonym Ted Horn and through his cartoon character " Red Ryder ", could not accept the invitation, but was one of the founding members. The founding meeting itself took place a few days later in Dye's studio, also in Sedona.

The first annual show was held on September 9, 1966 at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma City . Works by Phippen, who died in the spring, were also shown here. Also represented were Darol Dickinson, Wayne Hunt, Harvey Johnson, John Kittelson, George Marks, Irvin "Shorty" Shope , Gordon Snidow, Grant Speed and Byron Wolfe . In 1970 the group had around 30 members. From 1973 the Phoenix Art Museum in Phoenix was the venue. In April 2011, the museum director James Ballinger rejected another event in the Phoenix Art Museum and criticized the fact that the style of the work had changed due to the addition of new members. As a result, it was exhibited again at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The venue for the annual exhibition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary was the Western Spirit , which opened in January 2015 : Scottsdale's Museum of the West in Scottsdale .

The CA's previous chairmen have been Tom Ryan, Gordon Snidow, William Moyers, Grant Speed, James Boren, Fred Fellows, James Reynolds, Harvey W. Johnson, Bill Owen, Howard Terpning , Gary Carter and Gary Niblett.
