Kermit Ruffins
Kermit Ruffins (born December 19, 1964 in New Orleans ) is an American musician ( trumpet , vocals , composition) of traditional jazz .
Ruffins was initially shaped by an uncle who was active as an amateur trumpeter, and supplemented his instrumental technique in school. He started playing in a street band when he was fifteen . In 1983 he founded the Rebirth Brass Band with Philip and Keith Frazier , of which he was a member until 1992 and for which he wrote songs such as Do Whatcha Wanna and Put Your Right Foot Forward . In 1992 he founded the quintet Barbecue Swingers , with whom he recorded World on a String and The Barbecue Swingers Live . He also worked with Wessell Anderson and Mark Whitfield, as well as with Wynton Marsalis , Maceo Parker , Walter Payton and Harry Connick . In the late 1990s he also led his own big band .
In 2003 he received his Barbecue Swingers the Offbeat's Best of The Beat Awards in Best Traditional Jazz Band .
