Matthew Heineman
Matthew Heineman (* in Washington, DC ) is an American documentary filmmaker , film director and producer, and cameraman .
Life
Matthew Heineman was born in Washington, DC and grew up in Darien and New Canaan, Connecticut. He attended the New Canaan Country School and the Brunswick School in Greenwich. His mother, Cristine Russell, works as a science journalist, and his father, Ben Heineman, as a lawyer.
After graduating from Dartmouth College in 2005, where he studied history, Heineman made his first documentary, Overcoming the Storm, about some of the New Orleans residents. His 2015 film Cartel Land was nominated for best documentary at the 88th Academy Awards and won three primetime Emmys, was named best documentary by the DGA and received the Courage Under Fire Award from the International Documentary Association. In this film he was about the drug war in Mexico. Heineman had previously directed and produced the Emmy-nominated documentary Escape Fire .
In his documentary City of Ghosts , which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2017 , he sheds light on the work of a group of Syrian citizen journalists in Raqqa called “Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently”, which tries to expose human rights violations committed by the Islamic State and combat the terrorists' misinformation campaigns in their home country.
