action

In Raqqa , a group called “Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently” documents the atrocities of the Islamic State

In the Syrian city of Raqqa , which is the de facto capital of the Islamic State , a group of Syrian citizen journalists who call themselves “Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently” works to expose human rights violations committed by IS and the terrorists' misinformation campaigns in their home country Combat Isis Territory.

They started as a group of school friends in the northern Syrian city to report on the anti-Assad movement during the Arab Spring in 2012, and in 2014 they began reporting on IS. They take great risks in documenting and publishing video, photo and written reports depicting the atrocities in their hometown, because if caught they face death. Hailed by journalist organizations around the world, the activists live undercover lives in constant danger. Some of the founders of the group had to flee to Turkey and Germany, but the Islamic State has called for the members of Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently to be killed, no matter where in the world they are.

Reviews

The film convinced 98 percent of the Rotten Tomatoes critics and received an average rating of 8.4 out of a possible 10 points.

The Guardian's Charlie Phillips says there are many touching moments of connectedness and sincere emotions of suffering in the film. A scene in which two RBSS members see Isis propaganda footage of their father being shot in the head is a difficult place to take, but shows the everyday reality with which the Isis controls their territory. Phillips goes on to say that the film was about more than personal loss and Heineman's admiration for the work of the journalists, but that it was intended as a guide to the media war between the Isis video team and the RBSS, caused by, for example, the destruction of Satellite dishes equate to an arms race.
