Julian Slater

Julian George Slater (* 1971 in Maidstone , Kent , England ) is a British sound engineer .

Life

Julian Slater, from Kent in south-east England, had been interested in sound engineering as a child. He studied at the School of Audio Engineering in London and wanted to work as a sound engineer in the music industry, then landed but right after studying more random in the film and television industry, where he in 1991 in the company Hackenbacker of nine years older sound engineer Nigel Heath worked and in 1992 was Heath's assistant sound editor on Peter Greenaway's film The Miracle of Mâcon . This was followed by work for the satirical television series The Day Today in the field of audio post-production, participation in the sound editing by Gabriel Axels Hamlet - The Prince of Jutland and the sound effects editing at Leaving Las Vegas by director Mike Figgis , always in collaboration with Nigel Heath which he then founded his own post production company in early 1995, later the Hackenbacker Audio Post Company in London.

Heath and Slater and their team were nominated for the first time in 1999 for the film Hilary & Jackie for the BAFTA Award in the category Best Sound. In 2000 he received a Primetime Emmy nomination for the television film Animal Farm and in 2001 for Shadow of the Vampire a nomination for the Golden Reel Award of the MPSE . In addition to this film work, the company was primarily active for British television, where it provided the sound design for the satirical television series by Chris Morris . Work with Morris - on The Day Today (1994) followed Brass Eye (1997) and Jam (2000) - also that the director led Edgar Wright , a big fan of Chris Morris, Slater for his feature film debut Shaun of the Dead committed . Since then, Slater has been responsible for the sound of all Edgar Wright's feature films. The high point of the longstanding collaboration so far was Slater's complex work on Baby Driver . Slater, who left his post-production company in 2008 and then worked as a freelancer in London, moved to Los Angeles in mid-2013 with his wife and two sons . His first work for the post production company Formosa Group included the sound editing for The Purge: Anarchy and the sound design of the Oscar-winning short film Love goes through the stomach . He then worked on the sound design of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road and won a Golden Reel Award as part of the team in 2016 .

In 2017, Jumanji: Willkommen im Jungle was the first major Hollywood production in which Slater was primarily responsible for the sound. In 2018 he was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
