Beyond the Sea - Music was his life is a biography of the singer Bobby Darin (1936–1973) from 2004 . The main role was cast by Kevin Spacey , who also acted as director , producer and screenwriter . The film was financed by producers Andy Paterson and Jan Fantl themselves, including through pre-sales, including to Lions Gate Entertainment . Filming began in November 2003 and the film was completed in August 2004.

Beyond the Sea premiered on September 11, 2004 at the Toronto International Film Festival in Canada . The film also opened the AFI in Los Angeles in November 2004 and had its US premiere in New York shortly afterwards . After it was shown as a “Special” at the 20th Panorama in February 2005 at the Berlinale 2005 , it was released in German theaters on February 17, 2005. A concert by Kevin Spacey and his orchestra in the Quatsch Comedy Club in Berlin also sparked conversation .

The film tells the story of the singer, entertainer and actor Bobby Darin . He was born as Walden Robert Cassotto, who at the age of seven is predicted to have a short life as he suffers from a serious heart disease. With the prospect of probably not passing the age of 15, Cassotto decides to make the most of his life. The doctors' prognosis turns out to be wrong and the young adult decides to make music his profession. In 1958 he became internationally known with his good mood song Splish Splash . In the following years he changes the style more often, but is mainly based on swing . He sings Mack the Knife and transforms the French song La Mer into the classic Beyond the Sea . During a film project, he falls in love with the actress Sandra Dee . The two marry against Dee's mother's wishes. But when Darin's fame comes to an end, there are also conflicts in the partnership. Only 37 years old, Bobby Darin died in 1973 during a heart operation.

In the opinion of “filmstarts.de” editor Carsten Baumgardt, the film is “less of a stringent consideration of Bobby Darin's life, but rather [a] colorful, swinging Kevin Spacey personality show”. Although he praises Spacey's “splendid” singing and dance performances, he sees few parallels to Bobby Darin.

James Berardinelli describes the wedding scenes and the Las Vegas concert as "coming from the heart" and "really moving", but also points out "embarrassing" moments such as the couple's argument, which he found "involuntarily funny".

It is generally criticized that Spacey looks too old for the role of young Darin and that Kate Bosworth appears a little pale. The achievements of all other actors, especially Bob Hoskins ', received consistent praise.
