action

Rachel Carlson is a very successful American crime novel writer based in London. Her little son Thomas dies one day in an accident. As a result of the accident, she is shocked and has writer's block. Eight months later, she still cannot write. Her marriage to editor Brian is in crisis.

Rachel moves to a lonely cabin near the remote village of Ingonish Cove in Scotland to find herself again and write her new novel. While walking in the village, she meets a woman who apparently has the second face and sees Rachel's deceased son near her. Rachel is increasingly receiving puzzling messages that she believes are from her son and has dreams about her son. To collect her senses, she drives to a lighthouse that is located on an offshore island within sight of her hut. She befriends Angus McCulloch, the keeper of the lighthouse; the initially platonic relationship soon becomes passionate.

After Angus does not appear to a village festival despite his acceptance, Rachel learns from the village community that Angus committed suicide seven years ago after his wife and her lover died in the lighthouse through complicity. The villagers doubt Rachel's statements and the pastor of the congregation does not believe Rachel's statements either when he shows Rachel Angus' grave in the cemetery. When Rachel finds the lighthouse uninhabited, empty and without a trace of her previous visits, she - doubting her sanity - calls her friend Sharon Winton in London. Sharon agrees to travel to her immediately.

Rachel is lured to the island by a light in the lighthouse. Hoping to meet Angus after all, she drives out to the island at night. In the lighthouse she meets her friend Sharon, who has just arrived. Angus appears and murders Sharon. Rachel escapes into the night in a panic.

What Rachel doesn't realize is that the murder of Sharon was orchestrated by Sharon herself and Rachel's husband Brian. The acquaintance with Angus was also planned by both. Sharon is jealous of Rachel's success, as is Brian, who is unsuccessful as a writer. Both work together to kill Rachel and make the murder look like suicide in order to get Rachel's fortune. The alleged Angus turns out to be their accomplice, who is actually called Patrick and assumed the identity of Angus in order to deceive Rachel.

Brian finds Rachel on Lighthouse Island and drugged her. He and Sharon tie Rachel with their legs to the anchor of a boat in order to drown her. Rachel regains consciousness and frees herself from her bonds underwater, as she remembers one of the clues from Thomas's ghost. Sharon dies inside the lighthouse in the ensuing fight against Rachel. Brian is killed by Patrick, who previously stayed in the lighthouse and had a supernatural encounter there. Patrick then commits suicide, just as Angus once did. In the end, Rachel returns to London and makes peace with herself and her son.
