William Oldroyd
William Oldroyd (* 1979 in London ) is a British film and theater director .
Life
Born in London in 1979 William Oldroyd studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art before house director at London's Young Vic Theater was where he modern adaptations of European classics like ghosts of Henrik Ibsen in a new version by Frank McGuinness staged. This was followed by directing work for larger productions such as Kean ou Désordre et Génie by Alexandre Dumas in an arrangement by Sartre in Tokyo, Waiting for Godot in Munich and The two noble cousins for the Royal Shakespeare Companys Complete Works Festival. Oldroyd has also staged operas such as Don Pasquale at Sadler's Wells Theater and La serva padrona in Viana do Castelo in Portugal.
In 2011, Oldroyd produced his first short film, Christ's Dog , which was nominated as best short film at the Hamburg International Independent Film Festival. His second short film, Best , won the Sundance London Short Film Competition in 2013. Oldroyd made his feature film directing debut with Lady Macbeth , in which Florence Pugh can be seen in the lead role. Oldroyd presented the film at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2016 . At the beginning of November 2017, the film was nominated in 15 categories for the British Independent Film Award , with Oldroyd being nominated for directing several times. The director received another nomination as part of the European Film Award 2017 for "European Discovery". The film is an adaptation of the novella The Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Nikolai Leskov , which refers to William Shakespeare's tragedy Macbeth and was adapted by Alice Birch .
