history

Emmis was founded in 1979 by Jeffrey Smulyan; to this day he is the company's chairman. Smulyan had taken over the WSVL-FM VHF station in Shelbyville , Indiana. With her he wanted to gain importance on the Indianapolis radio market. Therefore he built a new transmitter mast and put the station into operation in July 1981 with the new callsign WENS . The program made a lot of innovations, in addition to a fresh AC format, the station also drew talented moderators. David Letterman started at WENS .

Based on the success of this station, Smulyan bought more stations. He claims to have introduced a number of innovations in the US radio market. These include the first 24-hour all-sports radio station (New York City's WFAN ); the first Rhythmic Top 40 station ( KPWR 106 in Los Angeles) and the first Adult Classic Soul station ( KISS-FM in New York).
