Urban Adult Contemporary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Urban Adult Contemporary (Urban AC) is a radio station format that is mainly distributed in the United States . The music selection is limited to R&B and black music from the 1980s to today. It is aimed at the target group of 25 to 54 year olds and was developed in 1988 by the US radio producer Barry Mayo.

Due to the older target group, news and current events have a higher priority in the program. In the evenings, numerous Urban AC stations play smooth jazz and other quiet pieces of music from the black music area. Numerous broadcasters implement the styles of music played in their slogan , such as "Today's R&B and Classic Soul", "The Adult Mix", "Smooth R&B and Classic Old Skool".

The Urban AC format is a sub-format of the adult contemporary radio format. The more recent version of the Urban AC format is called Urban Contemporary.

WBLS in New York is considered the flagship of the Urban AC format and was one of the first stations that Urban AC introduced in 1994.
