Harvey's new eyes

In the first chapter you get to know Lilli, a cute little girl with blonde pigtails who lives in a convent school. She is so shy that she never manages to talk to others. Most of her classmates do not like her and some of them even harass the little one. Her only friend is Edna, Edna's heroine breaks out . How she got into this school is not initially explained. However, one discovers that the insane asylum from Edna Erbruch is nearby when one goes into the garden with Lilli. The headmistress Oberin Ignatz lets Lilli do work in the house and garden all the time.

In her opinion, the undisciplined and naughty attitude, embodied mainly by Lilli, worries the superior, so she consults Dr. Marcel, who also appeared in Edna Erupts and, through Edna's fault, is in a wheelchair. Edna fears the embittered old man's revenge and asks Lilli, on the one hand, to kill Gerret, a young man who is staying in the monastery, because she considers him a spy for the superior, and, on the other, to destroy all traces of her presence in the convent school .

Lilli fulfills these tasks as well as the orders of the superior, killing all the students of the school as well as an adult guest of the boarding school - a clown who applied to be a therapist -, getting involved in accidents or driving them into suicide. However, she herself does not notice anything, as a censor nominee always appears immediately and paints over the respective image area pink. Even the adults do not notice the absence of the persons concerned or their corpses.

When Dr. Marcel arrives, Edna has already fled and Lilli is warned by Gerret, who identifies himself as a policeman and is investigating the superior on suspicion of child abuse. He tries to help Lilli to escape, but the superior and Dr. Marcel Lilli a. Dr. Marcel demonstrates his new hypnosis procedure to Lilli. For this purpose, he has put in Edna's blue stuffed rabbit Harvey new eyes, which light up red and hypnotize Lilli. With Harvey's help, Dr. Marcel bans in her head that she must obey in the future. Gerret contacts her again and urges her to flee the monastery. However, Lilli cannot follow this advice as the prohibitions in her head prevent her from doing so. He explains to Lilli how she can circumvent the prohibitions: If she hypnotizes herself with Harvey's help, she ends up in a parallel world in her brain. There she encounters personifications of the prohibitions. As soon as they can prove their own futility to them, they dissolve. In fact, Lilli succeeds in breaking two bans and escaping from school.

The second chapter takes place in the village between the school and the asylum. Gerret wants to help her find Edna, but fears that Dr. Marcel's employees were brought back to the institution. In the meantime it has got dark. In the village there are some patients from Dr. Marcel's institution on the way, helping Lilli in her search. She has to watch out for the nurses who are looking for Lilli, Edna and the escaped inmates. She is also prevented from searching by the rest of the prohibitions in her head and has to override some of them as well. Lilli finally finds Gerret next to the institution's van. When she tries to get his attention, the orderlies notice her presence. A masked phantom appears, scares away the nurses and disappears again. Lilli manages to get into the institution through the sewer system.

The third part takes place in the institution. There Lilli meets the phantom again, who is hostile to her. She can flee from him and enter the patient's quarters through the heating pipes. There she gets to know the patients, some of whom already appeared in Edna Erbruch. However, the lattice door to the stairwell is firmly locked so that Lilli cannot get to Edna's cell in the attic. She only manages to do this when she has successfully fought the remaining prohibitions in her head. However, she also realizes what happened to her classmates and that she is responsible for their deaths.

In the attic she meets the phantom again. It turns out that this Dr. Marcel's second son is Ruben. On the one hand he mourns his deceased brother Alfred, on the other hand he hated him during his lifetime, as Dr. Marcel had presented Alfred as an example of perfect upbringing and locked Ruben in the basement of the institution. This conflict made Ruben crazy. Lilli enables him to act out his aggression towards his deceased brother. This distracts him so that she can take his master key and get into Edna's cell.

She finds the matron in the padded cell. This was done by Dr. Marcel is also hypnotized and is now knitting more Harvey dolls for him, which he wants to export all over the world. Lilli sees Edna and Gerret hanging in shackles on the cell wall. The two ask Lilli to free her.

Lilli Harvey finds original eyes in the matron's sewing basket. When she puts it back on him, the matron's hypnosis is broken. She hands Lilli a knife. But instead of freeing her two friends from their shackles, Lilli goes to Dr. Marcel to stab him.

He explains to Lilli that she has a severe mental disorder. In his opinion, this is also expressed in the fact that, with Edna and Gerret, she has created two fictional friends who have spurred them on to their deeds. Edna and Gerret then suddenly appear in Dr. Marcel's office. They agree with the doctor and ask Lilli to put the knife down.

Now the player has the choice between three endings: Either Lilli believes Dr. Marcel, puts the knife down and lets herself be hypnotized to get rid of her aggression, or she stabs the doctor or she gets angry so that her speech block goes away and for the first time in her life does what she sees fit.

Characters

The narrator

Since the main character of this game is interrupted every time he tries to speak, a narrator gives the necessary explanations. He has a dark sense of humor and comments on Lilli's actions accordingly. He is spoken by Götz Otto .

Lilly

Lilli is the protagonist of the game. She is blonde and her hair is tied in two braids. She is cute, but also more dangerous than you think, because she more or less unconsciously kills all the students in the school (except Edna and Gerret) as well as an adult guest of the boarding school, and depending on the player's decision (then completely consciously) also Dr. Marcel. She is too shy to assert herself when speaking and only communicates through the beginning of words and unhappy moans. Her voice gives her Sinikka Compart.

Edna

Edna is the main character from Edna breaks out , who seems to have found shelter in the school following her adventure, and Lilli's best (and only) friend. When she learns that Dr. Marcel is invited to the convent school, she asks Lilli to destroy all evidence of her presence so that she can escape. After her escape from the monastery, she is met by Dr. Marcel's henchmen captured and locked with Gerret and the hypnotized matron in their old cell (known from "Edna breaks out"). Your spokesperson is Alianne Diehl .

Superior Ignatz

The extremely strict and child-hating superior is the head of the monastery school. She always gives Lilli difficult jobs that Lilli almost never does properly. In addition, she stutters when she hears the sound "ki". After Edna and Lilli's escape, Dr. Marcel hypnotized, locked in a cell with Edna and Gerret and forced to knit "new" Harveys. When Lilli is liberated, she breaks through the matron's hypnosis and “heals” her authoritarian and inhumane manner. It is spoken by Irmgard Jedamzik .

Dr. Marcel

Dr. Marcel was already a character in Edna Erupts . Since the game is linked to the scene in which Edna pushed the doctor down a flight of stairs, he is now sitting in a wheelchair. He has worked for a long time to develop a hypnosis method for rebellious children. Dr. Marcel is voiced by Thomas Fitschen .

Harvey

The blue stuffed bunny from Edna breaks out was designed by Dr. Marcel turned it into a hypnosis instrument to drive children out of disobedience to adults. As in the predecessor Edna breaks out, it was spoken of by Alexander Grimm.

Gerret

Gerret is a person who performs in the monastery. Whether he is a student, an employee (like the canteen lady Doris) or a guest (like Frank the archaeologist) is not shown in detail. Lilli's friend Edna suspects him of spying for the superior. He has set up a listening chamber in the confessional and behind the superior's office. After Edna's escape, however, he introduces himself to Lilli as an undercover police officer who was investigating the superior and Dr. Marcel investigated for child abuse. He helps Lilli to escape from the monastery and assures her support, Dr. Arrest Marcel and free Edna, but the guards from Dr. Marcel kidnapped and locked in the padded cell of the institution with Edna and the hypnotized matron. He is voiced by Malte Janssen .

The censorship nomads

The small, potato-shaped creatures "defuse" the game by painting over parts of the picture pink. So Lilli does not notice that she is causing the death of others.

Game principle and technology

Harvey's New Eyes is a point-and-click adventure . From Sprites composite characters act before hand-drawn, some animated scenes. The player can use the mouse to move his character through the locations and use the mouse buttons to initiate actions that allow the character to interact with his environment. He can find objects and apply them to the environment or other objects and communicate with NPCs . As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked.

Production notes

The versions for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS were released in August 2011. A version for Linux was announced with an update in May 2016.

reception

Like its predecessor, the sequel received good to very good reviews. From 19 aggregated ratings, Harveys Neue Augen achieved a score of 75 on Metacritic . 4Players.de, for example, gave 90%. The highest rating was given by Gamers.de with 91 points. The same points were praised as with the predecessor: the graphics, the story, the humor, etc. The specialist magazine Adventure-Treff praised the humor and the musical and spoken setting of the game, but noted that Harvey's new eyes compared to the predecessor had fewer opportunities for interaction and that three years after the technically obsolete predecessor at the time of publication, the technically identical substructure looked very out of date.
