A New Beginning (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A New Beginning is a classic point-and-click adventure developed in Germany from 2010, developed by Daedalic Entertainment and published by Deep Silver .

action

In an unspecified future, humanity, shaken by environmental catastrophes, is threatened with final extinction by a solar flare. A group of scientists, including the radio operator Fay, are sent back in time to stop the climate change that led to the disastrous living conditions of the future. Due to a mistake, the team ends up in 2050, when large parts of the world were already uninhabitable, and almost the entire team is killed. The two survivors, Fay and Salvador, find a newspaper article about the scientist Bent Svensson, who researched alternative energy sources in the early 21st century, and travel back to the present to visit Svensson. In the present, Fay convinces the retired scientist to continue his research on an alga for energy production in order to present it to a climate conference. They also have to prevent the explosion of a nuclear power plant in the Brazilian jungle, which would die off and cause the natural disasters mentioned above.

Game principle and technology

A New Beginning is a 2D point-and-click adventure. From Sprites composite characters act before hand-drawn, some animated scenes. The player can use the mouse to move his character through the locations and use the mouse buttons to initiate actions that allow the character to interact with his environment. Fay and Bent can find objects and apply them to the environment or other objects and communicate with NPCs . As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked. Some mini-games integrated into the game plot require motor skills, but can be skipped.

Production notes

The game initially caused displeasure among some users because it would not start between midnight and 1 a.m. Many users also had apparently random crashes when changing rooms or cutscenes. Both bugs could be fixed with a patch.

In 2012, a revised version of the game was released under the title A New Beginning: Final Cut , which supports seven languages, contains longer cutscenes and some technical improvements. In addition to German and English, the game has also been localized to French and Russian, and subtitles have been added for Italian, Spanish and Polish.

music

While the main theme of the soundtrack is from Periscope Studio , most of the background music was written and produced by Knights of Soundtrack . The musical style is very versatile and ranges between orchestral film music and diegetic music in the style of Europop and Lounge . In addition to Knights of Soundtrack, other people are named who contributed music to the game. Among them are André Navratil and Damian Zur, who composed the Bent theme, as well as Florian Behnsen and Giliam Spliethoff, who contributed various additional music.
