Deponia Doomsday

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Deponia Doomsday is a point-and-click adventure from the German development studio Daedalic Entertainment . It was published in March 2016 as the fourth and last part of a game series by the author and Daedalic co-founder Jan Müller-Michaelis . The first three parts Deponia , Chaos auf Deponia and Goodbye Deponia were released in 2012 and 2013.

The game builds on the previous parts, but its plot also tells of events before the first part. According to Jan Müller-Michaelis, however, it is not a classic prequel or sequel to the first three parts of the series. He himself describes the game as a "parallel source".

action

In the opening scene, which is also a tutorial for the game, the player controls a visibly aged Rufus. This is pursued on an abandoned and icy Deponia by a huge horde of dangerous, lizard-like monsters, the Fewlocks, and decides to initiate the demolition of the planet.

Many years earlier, Rufus awoke in the late afternoon in Kuvaq City. He dreamed the tutorial, just like the events of the other Deponia games, and thinks this is a vision. His latest plan is to travel to the flying city of Elysium in a hot air balloon - this time with his irascible girlfriend Toni. Toni wants to take her precious crystal glasses with her, but they are destroyed by a parking car. The driver's name is Angus McChronicle, aka Mac, from the University of Porta Rustica and the vehicle is a time machine. The attempt to turn back the time to prevent the destruction of the glasses fails because Rufus is distracted every time by a strange, pink elephant. So he wants to build an elephant trap and lie in wait. He receives support from the always drunk friar Tuck. Rufus puts a hat made of aluminum foil on him so that he does not forget the matter when turning back the time again. The crystal glasses remain intact, but Toni storms off for another reason, insulted, and even sets her father's explosives shop on fire. The Chronocar is rendered inoperable by a piece of rubble. Rufus can still launch the balloon, but falls over Kuvaq, which sets the city on fire. The only way out of this situation is the elephant's time machine, the so-called timepod.

Rufus and Mac end up in Elysium, which has crashed on Deponia. There he meets Ronny, a language interface in the form of a small sunflower with a guitar, which is very annoying to Rufus with her high-pitched voice and her cheerful manner, and Goal. This, in the game it is called Future Goal, is the one from the trilogy, but doesn't speak very well of Rufus. The three of them save themselves in an intact Elysium. Future-Goal then immediately flees with the Timepod.

Rufus now wants to prevent Goal from traveling to Deponia - which fails, however - and to receive an audience with the Elysian council of elders. To do this, he actually only needs to score 10,000 points in the fun zone . Shortly before he achieves that, a time loop is triggered each time, which resets the score to 0. That is why Rufus wants to reset Ronny by putting an aluminum hat on him so that the score remains saved. In doing so, Ronny more or less loses his mind. While trying to convene the council of elders, Rufus accidentally creates the Fewlocks. In the last second, Rufus manages to get a code until the time loop reopens.

With this code, Rufus can convince Goal not to leave. However, since Ronny's Fewlock DNA was saved, they attack Elysium. Rufus, Goal and Mac escape together with the help of a parachute and land on Deponia in an old amusement park. Mac finds out they are a few hours before he leaves for Kuvaq. So if they got to the university on time, all of this could be prevented. Rufus manages to find a boat to Porta Fisco, but only under the condition of a love photo with Goal. She is therefore quite offended. The boat arrives way too late.

Game principle and technology

Deponia is a point-and-click adventure . From Sprites composite characters act before hand-drawn, some animated scenes. The player can use the mouse to move his character through the locations and use the mouse buttons to initiate actions that allow the character to interact with his environment. Rufus can find objects and apply them to the environment or other objects and communicate with NPCs . As the story progresses, more locations will be unlocked. Dialogues with NPCs take place with the help of the multiple choice procedure. Some mini-games integrated into the game plot require motor skills, but can be skipped.

Deponia Doomsday received mostly positive reviews. The review database Metacritic aggregates 29 reviews with an average value of 76. The developers were able to dispel reservations about returning to a story that was considered to have been told after the third part and for which its author had initially categorically excluded the possibility of a continuation. In addition to the humor and great attention to detail, the length of the game, which is above average for an adventure, is praised. It is criticized that some jokes get a little too shallow and the player character has to spend a lot of time repeatedly running back and forth in some scenes.

In 2016, Deponia Doomsday was nominated in three categories for the German Computer Game Award, but did not win any of the categories.
