The Whispered World (English for "The whispered world") is an Adventure - Computer game . It was conceived by Marco Hüllen , developed by Daedalic Entertainment and published by Koch Media on August 28, 2009 in Germany , Austria and Switzerland for the PC . In terms of the gameplay, the controls and the graphic structure, the game is based heavily on older classics of the genre such as The Curse of Monkey Island or Full Throttle .

According to the company, the adventure game was the biggest project in Daedalic's company history.

On May 6, 2014, just under 5 years after its initial release, the game was re-released in a special edition that includes developer comments and some technical improvements. The sequel called Silence was originally announced for 2014 but wasn't released until November 15, 2016.

The young clown Sadwick travels the world with his family's traveling circus, but he doesn't feel like laughing. He is deeply melancholy and has the desire to escape the daily grind. One night a strange spherical figure speaks to him in a dream and prophesies that his world is doomed and that it will be him who will destroy it.

Chapter 1: The autumn forest

As every night, Sadwick has terrible nightmares. After the clown only woke up in broad daylight, his brother Ben made him very unpopularly aware that he had once again missed the rehearsals at sunrise. Together with his pet caterpillar, Spot, he goes for a walk in the autumn forest to recruit people for the circus performance.

On the bank of a lake he meets Bobby, a messenger belonging to the Chaski people. This tells Sadwick that he is on a very important mission. The end is near: Bobby has to deliver the Whisper Stone to his king in the capital Corona as soon as possible. Sadwick is reminded of his nightly recurring dreams. Bobby tells him about an oracle named Shana and gives him the Whisper Stone. When he is attacked and kidnapped by the Asgil, Sadwick finally goes in search of the oracle in order to have his dreams interpreted.

Shana prophesies that Sadwick has the fate of the whispered world in his hands and that he will destroy it. For his part, determined to save the world, Sadwick set himself the task of bringing the Whispering Stone back to Corona. A certain Kalida, who lives in the middle of the lake, will lead him there, as Shana explains.

Chapter 2: Kalida's awakening

Arriving in the middle of the lake, Sadwick encounters the hermit Mulachei, who tells him that all living beings on the island are part of it. In the center of the island, in a small village built on a mountain, Sadwick meets Ruben, who claims to rule the island because he has exactly 10,000 pearls. He didn't need any more, which is why he had the pearl press factory shut down without further ado. Rubens henchman Bando has suffered greatly from the closure. His favorite pastime is making loud noises - much to the displeasure of his superior, who is not only scared but also worries about the sleeping Kalida. You must never be woken up, otherwise the whole island - and with it the treasure - would be lost. Ruben has done everything necessary to stop loud noises. He put himself and Bando into everyday unemployment and banished the yakis, tiny birds with a passion to sing, to the back of the island.

In order to wake Kalida anyway, Sadwick now sees the task of making noise for himself. He rings the bell that earlier announced lunch. He blows the horn that warned ships approaching earlier. And he steals a single pearl from Rubens' collection, who immediately starts the pearl-pressing machines again.

The clown then convinces Mulachei not to light the candles on the island that are holding back the singing yakis. Freed from the intimidating candlelight, the birds go down to the bank, where Sadwick lets them sing their typical chirping song. Kalida wakes up, followed by a tremor. It turns out that the bearer of this name is a huge, bird-like monster that has carried the island on her back the whole time. Now she is heading for Corona.

Chapter 3: The Asgil

Sadwick finds himself in a devastated area. Corona can be seen in the distance. Sadwick and Spot enter a cave and overhear a conversation. The Asgil leader, Loucaux, plans one final, all-important blow against the king and his empire. The way is blocked by a guard named Gourney, whom Sadwick knocked unconscious with a thrown stone boulder. During the subsequent spying on the Asgil slaughter plans, Loucaux catches the boy and locks him in a dungeon, separated from his pet. Sadwick slips out of the cell and learns that Spot, himself locked in a wooden cage hanging in the air, is to be made into caterpillar soup.

Loucaux likes soup. Mainly mold soup. He likes them so much that he had his last three cooks executed for failing at the delicate preparation. Sadwick finds the fourth in his hiding place and elicits the recipe from him. Then he gets the ingredients, goes to the canteen, prepares the traditional dish and rings the bell for lunch. Loucaux likes the soup so much that he falls asleep at the table. Together with the subsequently freed spot, they manage to escape from the Asgil Gorge using an elevator.

Once at the top, after only a few steps, Sadwick notices the high-rise railway line, which apparently is not in operation. Maurice, the attendant of the associated train station, hides the reason, but in response to Sadwick's question, says that his line would be the only way to Corona. Sadwick persuades the always profit-oriented short stature to turn the train station into a museum. He can get used to the idea, but requires ten gold pieces as entry, which Sadwick does not have. Therefore, Maurice hires him in several small jobs at the same time in order to earn money and receive perks. Then Sadwick can enter the station and set off for Corona with the above locomotive.

Sadwick and his walking Swiss Army Knife, Spot, get out of their locomotive in front of the castle entrance and immediately look at a locked gate. Spot enters the courtyard through a gap and searches alone in a kind of obstacle course for a way to open the gate. Together again, Sadwick notices that the castle is deserted. All of them have brought themselves to safety prematurely from the approaching Asgil. The only exception is Bobby, who hides in a barrel from the attackers. Apparently he was not kidnapped at all, only saw a fox and hid in a cave out of fear. How he made it to Corona, however, remains a mystery. When Sadwick asked how one could save the world, Sadwick gave up. The situation is hopeless even for a Chaski. After extensive explorations within the castle walls, the clown enters the royal star laboratory, where he finds the responsible astronomer. There is a planetarium in the hall, which is precisely aligned with the structure of space and time. The astronomer states that it is so precise that one could think that the world itself is based on him. The imminent demise of the whispered world is due to damage to the structure. The world well, which is in the middle of the hall, is drying up. The only way to avert doom is to repair the device. However, only someone of royal blood can do that. The king has withdrawn seriously ill in his locked tower and is therefore not available. In order to heal the king again, the water in the well, the "water of life", is necessary. In order to break the vicious circle, Sadwick involuntarily lends a hand himself. Sadwick has to oil the planetarium, find spare parts and finally get the planets back into order. Finally, he examines various records of the arrangement of the planets, puts the whisper stone in the control panel, sorts the planets into the correct order, and turns the crank to get the device going again.

The gate to the king's tower opens. Sadwick is relieved and does not notice that Spot has crawled through his legs and is drinking from the well. The caterpillar pupates in a cocoon. Spot has reached the next stage in its life cycle, proving that Sadwick is successful. The water in the well is actually the water of life . The earth is shaking. Spots cocoon falls into the depths. The planetarium rotates faster and faster and with it the structure of space and time. As the astronomer looks out of the window, he notices a huge blue light that seems to be racing towards the castle. It is that evil figure from Sadwick's recurring dreams. The figure stands in the center of the planetarium, begins to speak to Sadwick and asks him if he really believed he could stop the end of the world. Even more so, it will be destroyed by his hand, because it was created for him only for this reason. Sadwick manages to shut down the planetarium just in time by pushing the crank into the gear drive. The figure turns to stone. Tar flows from the corners of their mouths and makes the water in the well viscous. The gate to the royal tower closes. The planetarium finally stands still, time freezes. The earth trembles once more. The rock needle on which Corona stands has shrunk further. To make matters worse, the Asgil have invaded and taken control of the capital. Now that time has stood still, they can rule over time. The leader Loucaux and his servant Gourney taste their triumph and go to the throne room. Sadwick surrenders without a fight.

He and Bobby are thrown into the castle dungeon. In the dungeon floor there is a wide hole into nowhere. Sadwick has his cage adjusted in height so that he falls into the abyss. He lands on a ledge trapped in time, where he finds Spots cocoon and a vial previously poured with water of life. Sadwick succeeds in getting Laucaux to accept him as a clown in his entourage. This enables him to get back to the star laboratory. There he uses the telescope as a cannon barrel to apply his hated circus trick again - but this time with a spot. Its hard shell breaks the stone crust of the figure. The gate to the king opens again. Sadwick works his way to the king's chamber.

Instead of the king, he finds familiar objects from his childhood and a large mirror. Inside sees a blond boy pulling him to the other side. There he tells him that the whispered world is just a dream that has arisen from the thoughts and fantasies of Sadwick who is in reality in a coma. The blond-haired boy is in a patient room inside a hospital. His father, sitting next to the bed, reads him the story of the whispered world from a book. The fictional Sadwick has the choice whether he helps his real counterpart to wake up or whether he denies this life. After great doubts, he finally breaks the mirror, whereupon the real Sadwick wakes up from his deep sleep.

Characters

In the whispered world, the player meets many different characters. Below is a list of those who play an essential role in the course of the plot, including the main characters controlled by the player himself.

Sadwick , the main character, is a twelve-year-old clown who travels the whispered world with his family's traveling circus. His name contains the English word "sad". In fact, Sadwick is almost always sad, which he expresses in his suitably dark clothing style. Colorful clothing, as the stereotype of a clown demands, is not his thing. He adapts to his surroundings - with tight brown tights, a camisole of the same color, a beige cover with a surrounding gold buckle as well as boots and gloves made of leather. The only feature that makes Sadwick even recognizable as a clown is his fool's cap .

Against the wishes of his brother Ben and his grandfather, Sadwick wants to go out into the world and go on adventures. Actually, it is supposed to make people laugh, entertain them and get them out of the gloom of dreary everyday life. But because he believes that he has to carry the whole burden of the world on his shoulders, he always feels overwhelmed, small and lost. Even lighter tasks like tidying up and performing tricks can't come close to making Sadwick feel satisfied. Ben, not at all anxious to help his little brother, also shows Sadwick how useless, unimportant and incapable he is. Grandpa takes no notice of any of this, because he is senile and constantly confuses Sadwick with his brother. So it is not surprising that Sadwick no longer has a social role in his family. His only point of reference is his pet spot. This extremely amiable and cheerful creature has always remained loyal to the boy - even on that day when Sadwick finally took his fate into his hands in order to free himself from the bleak, vain circus everyday life.

Spot ( Engl. Fleck, office), Sadwick Sidekick is a relatively large, thick green caterpillar and Sadwick pet and faithful companion. He has mastered the transformation skills that can help Sadwick reach places he would otherwise never get. Spot can ignite, soak into a round ball with water, become flat like a piece of paper or even split into small, individual balls. Spot often has to suffer from hunger and thirst or is misused for experiments. Nevertheless, he feels very drawn to his master.

Ben is Sadwick's brother. He is moody, incomprehensible and always annoyed by Sadwick. Despite the grumpiness, he understands juggling as the only worthwhile occupation for himself and his family.

Grandpa , Sadwick's senile grandfather, spends the evening cooking inedible dishes and lost in confused memories of the past. Usually his underpants play a central role. Moreover, he always confuses Sadwick with Ben.

Bobby belongs to the Chaski people who have been the messengers of the king for generations. The arrogant and arrogant traveler camps on the banks of the lake in the middle of the autumn forest. Sadwick states that he is on a very important mission: He must deliver a whisper stone to his king in the capital Corona as quickly as possible so that the siege by the Asgil, evil lizards, can be thwarted.

Shana is a clairvoyant, also called an oracle. Bobby is looking for her because she should show him the right way to the king and know the shortest way back to Corona. Unfortunately, the messenger has had no luck with the search so far, so he asks Sadwick for help. When Sadwick hears the word oracle, he asks Bobby to take him with him, because Shana might finally tell him what his dreams mean. Sadwick finds out where to look for Shana and Bobby draws the places he knows on the map.

Ruben is a resident of the nocturnal island, where everyone has fallen into weary indolence. He claims to rule that island because he has a vast treasure trove of pearls. He has amassed this with the help of his now disused pearl press factory and is safely hoarding it in his rooms. Rubens henchman Bando suffered greatly from the closure of the factory. He always stays in his wooden hut and waits to finally be able to work again. Bando's favorite pastime is making loud noises - much to the displeasure of his supervisor, who is very scared.

Maurice is the diminutive station attendant on a disused line. He's not very busy. Accordingly, he is concerned about his station: there is rubbish and dirty laundry everywhere, while screeching birds flutter around the cubicle. Its exterior is reminiscent of a train driver . The careless lifestyle is also evident in his patched clothing. He wears dungarees and a tall top hat that seems unsuitable for his size.

Ralv and Yngo are two brotherly stones who want to rule the whispered world. Because they lie back to back on the floor, they perceive their surroundings in completely different ways.

The Asgil are vicious lizard beings who besiege Corona and want to suppress the world. The self-loving head of the Asgil army, Loucaux, plans further attacks to storm the king's castle with his naive servant Gourney and to take control of the capital.

Game principle and technology

The Whispered World is traditionally controlled by point-and-click . This means that the player moves Sadwick and Spot to a desired pixel in the game world with a click of the mouse - in the sense of the technical term mentioned: point and click. By interacting with other characters, i.e. having conversations, collecting objects and combining them, certain puzzles are solved that make progress in the game difficult. If the player in a special section or in a new chapter, a cut is made and a cutscene in the animated style from running. During one of these, the player is placed in the passive state of a mere spectator, so he no longer has any influence on what is happening, and Sadwick, who was originally directed by him, is shown as an independently acting character. Overall, the sequences distributed throughout the course of the plot last around fifteen minutes.

Similar to The Curse of Monkey Island (using a coin) or full throttle (using a skull), all possible interactions (e.g. speaking, looking at or recording) are displayed via a control that can be activated in the foreground, a small menu. This opens when the left mouse button is pressed. A right click in turn opens the inventory of a bag. During dialogues, given sentences are made available to the player as questions, answers or comments. In addition, there is a piece of parchment at the top right of the picture, which, when rolled up, offers the player the opportunity to change the shape of the spots; see screenshot in the Characters section .

A fairly common element of the puzzle in this genre is dialogue in the whispered world. The player should make every possible conversation in order to obtain important key information. Some of these are indispensable for progressing in the game. However, the conversations do not consist of nested sequences that only unlock the speech line decisive for the solution in a certain order, which should reduce the level of difficulty, but of those in which the player must always choose the correct answer from a fixed sequence of a questionnaire. TWW is one of the few adventure games in recent years to offer dialogue puzzles that deserve this name. Nevertheless, the key information taken from conversations is a valuable asset that the player can use at a later point in time. For example, with the logic, puzzle and combination puzzles that are classically represented in the genre and that make up the majority of the gameplay . The latter are inspired by the famous Adventures by LucasArts and therefore have largely similar characteristics.

Although TWW is set in a fantastic world and bizarre incidents are not uncommon, the puzzles are fair and understandable. On the other hand, finding certain objects with a high level of detail typical for TWW (rarely within the genre) can be quite cumbersome as a logical consequence. To make things easier, the developers set up a so-called hotspot function that shows all the actions to be used. Area transitions and objects that the player does not notice at first sight are no longer hidden from him.

The sidekick spot even has its own small level . In the “spot course” called by the developers, the caterpillar is left to its own devices and, under time pressure, has to trigger a number of smaller mechanisms in order to achieve its goal. It is the only section in the game where you need to react quickly.

Production notes

The starting point for the development of The Whispered World was the private "Rhein-Sieg Academy for Realistic Art and Design" in Hennef , where Marco Hüllen wrote his diploma thesis on graphic designer and illustrator with the title "Development and marketing of the computer game 'The Whispered World'" had submitted. As a result, he was hired first by the now insolvent company Bad Brain Entertainment, then by Daedalic Entertainment as lead artist . With both of them he was able to continue working on his original diploma thesis together with other graphic artists. However, because of Bad Brain's bankruptcy, the game was almost made available as freeware .

Hüllen justified the intention of creating an exemplary representative of the adventure genre or a worthy, modern successor to the old classics as follows: “In this day and age, when virtual 'shooting games' shape the computer world, I want to go back to the roots of the genre to return. The young players of action games are not familiar with adventure games and many older fans are longing for these old games, which are more about action and intelligence than stupid finger acrobatics. This created a niche in the market that some companies have already recognized. My game should fill this gap. ”(See also:“ Adventure - Death of a Genre ? ”) In short: The game should be considered a“ future reference for the adventure genre ”.

The author Jan Müller-Michaelis was mainly responsible for the texts and dialogues occurring in the game in his role as Creative Director . Under the direction of lead programmer Jan Napitupulu , several programmers worked on a modified version of the Visionaire engine . The full development staff consisted of at least twenty other people, including graphic artists , animators , sound designers , PR managers , product managers , etc.

On August 6, 2009, TWW achieved gold status . At that point, all development work was done and the game was ready for mass production . From August 19 to 23, TWW was presented to the general public for the first time at gamescom in Cologne . Thus, interested parties were able to test the game at the Deep Silver booth before the actual release date . Some of the people involved in the development were also present at the stand.

The Whispered World is set in a bizarre, fantastic, melancholy world. This is graphically structured in two dimensions and contains numerous animations (flickering candles, smoke, flowing streams, waterfalls, visible comets, etc.) that set the environment in motion and make it look authentic. The hand-painted backgrounds consist of several drawing levels: superimposed soils, mountains and clouds, which create a depth effect for the eye of the player and move at different speeds as the player walks (so-called parallax scrolling ). An image can contain up to twenty levels. The very detailed foregrounds and the figures are also designed by hand. Stylistically, the graphics can be clearly assigned to a European hand. Elements from the Japanese art of drawing - for example the background structure typical of anime as it can be seen in Spirited Away - are also included. The only object in the game that was not drawn by hand is the 3D model of a mechanical planetarium .

The maximum image resolution that can be achieved is 1024 × 768 pixels. However, many of the backgrounds are not limited to this level. Around half of the scenes are rolling backgrounds that expand to different degrees beyond the aspect ratio (4: 3) to the left and right or up and down.

Soundtrack

Each of the four chapters contained in the game has its own background music. Together they represent a unit that is intended to appropriately express the course of the action. If the player enters a special section of the game, for example a cave, the sounds become deeper depending on the situation and thus appear darker and colder. The changing soundscape , which counts over five hundred self-recorded noises provided by databases, also gives the player an indication of whether he is acting appropriately and has taken the correct path for the progress of the story.

The Periscope Studio , which cooperates with Daedalic Entertainment, was responsible for creating the soundtracks . The pieces consist exclusively of classical music , played by a quintet consisting of piano , bassoon and flute .

With a few exceptions, the developers have hired less well-known voice actors from the industry for the adventure in the whispered world . They want to do without well-known speakers in order not to evoke associations with well-known characters. During three weeks fifteen speakers set over 10,000 lines of text to music. Seventeen roles had to be filled, with the actress Katja Keßler playing the only female role in the play.

After the first speech samples were published, Sadwick's voice was heavily criticized. To a twelve-year-old, it sounds both childlike and tearful and is annoying in the long run. Defense lawyers, on the other hand, say the voice is unusual, but appropriate because it underscores Sadwick's general mood. The dialogue texts also caused little enthusiasm. They would be less reminiscent of serious adult entertainment than more of the crazy Edna from Daedalic's first work.

In addition to the original German version, the original version contains fully spoken dubbing in English and French as well as subtitles in Italian and Spanish. In the special edition , Russian and Polish subtitles were added, but the French language version had to be completely removed for licensing reasons.

copy protection

The copy protection of TWW is queried in the first edition of around 20,000 copies via three plastic dodecahedra labeled with runes . The twelve-sided bodies are included in the packaging and can also be used as dice for the Droggel board game (see section Miscellaneous ), which is printed on the back of the poster that is also included . Download versions and later editions are fully protected by conventional, technical copy protection. The DVD is in all editions by the frequently used in the gaming industry Tagès process on originality and presence in the drive tested.

As soon as the game starts, the player is shown images of the three dice and is asked to solve the "riddle" in order to prove himself worthy of entering the whispered world. Ten areas are hidden, except for the remaining two. The centered area shows a question mark, while a rune symbol can be seen on any other area. It is the player's task to turn the dice until the area with the appropriate symbol is in the position shown on the screen. Then he uses a palette to enter the symbol he is looking for with the question mark. If all three symbols have been entered correctly, the player will be taken to the main menu. This procedure must be repeated each time the game starts.

Many critics are of the opinion that the cube query gets on your nerves over time, after repeated solving, because it has to be repeated over and over again. It is particularly undesirable if you actually want to continue playing quickly. It is also criticized that the game cannot be started if the player loses one or more of his dice. Some critics, however, are delighted with the nostalgic practice: It reminds us of the turntables from Monkey Island and can be seen as an homage or reminiscence and a bow to the old genre greats. The principle of "external" copy protection was mainly used at the beginning of the 1990s, the height of Adventure.

publication

Initially, TWW was scheduled to be published on June 12, 2009. In order to guarantee additional development time for final improvements, the decision was made for August 28 of the same year. During 2010 the game was also released in France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Scandinavia and the United Kingdom. The original version was delivered in an elaborately processed packaging, which contains a few extras: a manual with artwork and solution help for the first puzzles, a poster printed on both sides and three dice that serve as copy protection. The latter are only included in the first edition.

An implementation ( porting ) for the Nintendo DS was planned but was not realized.

Special edition

On May 6, 2014, the game was re-released in a special edition , which is available both as a retail version on DVD and via the digital game platforms Steam and GOG . Developer comments from Marco Hüllen and Jan "Poki" Müller-Michaelis have been added, which can be played on any screen by clicking an icon. There is also now the option to skip most of the mini-games. The Steam version was also equipped with "achievements". There were also changes to the language versions available (see section Synchronization ).

Owners of the Steam version received the upgrade to the Special Edition free of charge, but this must be installed separately. The original version is still available to users who purchased it on Steam by May 5, 2014, but it is no longer possible to purchase a new version.

Others

  • Sadwick's textures have twelve individual images each in eight directions in which he can move. This results in a total of 96 images (special maneuvers not included).
  • The dice game Droggel is an allusion to Edna Erbruch , Daedalic's first work. In this game, the protagonist Edna encounters an obviously confused man in the common room of the insane asylum, who only reacts to all attempts to speak to him with the word “drug gel cup”.
  • On April 1, 2009, Daedalic Entertainment jokingly announced that it would be releasing the game as a text-only adventure game . The company's managing director, Carsten Fichtelmann , justified this step with the earlier success that Edna breaks out thanks to his old-fashioned action verbs ( look at , take , give, etc.). The developers decided to consistently pursue this practice. In addition, because of the financial crisis that began in 2007, they would have to deal with all possible savings potential. As Fichtelmann explained: “All this graphic stuff is just too expensive.” To reinforce the joke, Daedalic even made a demo version of the potential hit available that was created with Inform .
  • In the room of the oracle Shana, a stone bust can be seen on a table on the right edge of the picture . It shows the grinning Edna.
  • Numerous paintings with the signature of a “ Marquis de Hüll” are hung in Rubens study . A subtle reference to the game designer Marco Hüllen.

In the German-speaking world, The Whispered World generated , all in all, an above-average opinion.

The lovingly hand-drawn environment throughout was particularly well received. The captivating story and the melancholy-humorous way the main character deals with the world and his fate were also highlighted.

Negative points were things like the sometimes unnecessarily difficult and in some places a bit unfairly designed puzzles. In addition, it was only sometimes noted that the controls of the game or the maximum resolution of only 1024 × 768 pixels might no longer be entirely up to date.
