Goodbye Deponia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Goodbye Deponia is a point-and-click adventure from Hamburg-based game developer and publisher Daedalic Entertainment . With its publication in October 2013 it followed the predecessors Deponia and Chaos on Deponia as the third part of a four-part series by the author and Daedalic co-founder Jan Müller-Michaelis .

The plot is directly linked to the events of the first two parts. The player slips back into the role of the antihero Rufus, who tries everything to get to the Elysium space station, to save the junk planet Deponia, but above all to improve his own living conditions. At his side are the Elysian Goal, with whom he has already fallen in love with Deponia , the doctor and hobbyist Doc, and the garbage ship captain Bozo.

action

Goodbye Deponia takes place shortly after Chaos of Deponia. Rufus, Goal, Bozo and Doc are on the cutter on the Organon rail when they get into the machinery of an Organon cruiser through carelessness on the part of Rufus. There Rufus meets Barry, who introduces himself as Rufus' biggest fan. In the conversation, the two roughly summarize the events of the predecessor, then Rufus can save himself and Goal from the cruiser. Meanwhile, Cletus reports to the bailiff Argus that his supposed fiancée is not Goal, but the deponian Donna . Argus sends Cletus together with Oppenbot , a seemingly overwhelmed robot, to search for Goal.

After Bozo's cutter has been completely destroyed, they have to continue on foot and spend the night at the Hotel Menetekel . Doc and Bozo immediately set up a small neurotechnical laboratory in their room to reunite the three divided personalities of Goal. But when Rufus offers his help, they send him to look for an invented device in the hope that he will no longer hinder them in their work. Shortly afterwards, Cletus also quartered in the hotel together with Oppenbot. Cletus mentions that there is such a device in the bag he has in his room. When Rufus gets his hands on this device and comes back to their shared room, Goal's operation has already been completed. Rufus is angry that they just wanted to get rid of him with a pointless assignment and angrily leaves the room. In the corridor he meets Argus and Donna who are looking for Cletus. Rufus and Goal are able to convince Argus that Rufus is Cletus. Argus offers Rufus and Goal to come with him to Porta Fisco to catch the last highboat to Elysium. Both agree.

Rufus and Goal are quartered in a room on the Organon cruiser. While Goal is writing a report to the Elysian Council of Elders, Rufus takes off his costume and asks Goal to come to bed with him. But when she mentions that they are under video surveillance, Rufus decides to penetrate the computer core to prevent exposure. Argus catches them deleting the recordings. Goal is led away while an Organon is tasked with clearing Rufus out of the way. Rufus manages to outsmart him and goes in search of Goal. Instead, he finds Cletus and Donna, who apparently managed to sneak onto the cruiser after all. He is hiding in a kind of box. However, the hiding place turns out to be a robot that was apparently designed for interrogation and torture, but can be operated manually. The robot is activated by Rufus and takes him to where Argus Goal has meanwhile tied to a cot. Argus takes off his helmet and reveals to Goal that he is also working against an explosion. Goal realizes that Argus looks exactly the same as Rufus and Cletus. Argus offers Goal to take him to Elysium as a fiancé instead of Rufus or Cletus, to put an end to the madness. Rufus tries desperately to intervene by pressing arbitrarily buttons inside the robot, whereupon Goal is injected with an overdose of Sodium Amytal. She still manages to confess her love for Rufus, then she dies. Out of sheer anger, Argus lets Rufus throw the robot overboard.

Rufus finds himself in "Hell", which is like the tutorial room. He finds a way out and realizes that "Hell" is a clone factory run by a mysterious figure named Hermes. Hermes explains to Rufus how all this happened: He is the one who declared Deponia uninhabitable, created Elysium, devised the evacuation plan with Utopia and created the Organon. He made the Organon from organic waste and nucleic acid so that the clones can be cloned at the desired age. Rufus, Argus and Cletus are part of a number of prototypes that preceded the production of the Organons (Prototype A, Prototype C and Prototype R). He took the prototype from the respect for life, which led to the fact that many were not afraid of death and died in various accidents. Rufus, Argus and Cletus only survived through various mutations in their genes, Rufus being the only one with the gene for hope. In addition, most of the time the clones look different before puberty than afterwards.

During the conversation, Rufus loses hope and also discovers a dead woman whom he believes is Goal. In the end, he lets Hermes convince him to revive Goal by cloning and cloning himself three times. Rufus clones Goal. Unfortunately, the nucleic acid tank is empty, which leads to her being cloned as an infant and then falling into the sewer in an accident. Rufus can clone himself into three "Rufi" with the help of Hermes: One has to follow Goal into the sewer with the nucleic acid and make it big again, one has to mobilize the resistance in Porta Fisco, and one has to take the last highboat to Elysium at the upper ascent station Hold on until the other two are done.

The Rufus in the sewer manages to find Goal and the nucleic acid, but Goal is pulled deeper into the sewer by a vortex. Rufus has no choice but to jump after her.

The Rufus in Porta Fisco is the first to encounter a deeply depressed Bozo, but he can cure him. He meets many well-known characters from the two previous parts, all of whom are in the resistance. During his absence, he was transformed into a military organization by a "general" and Rufus is not recognized at the gate. After Bozo has been healed, he identifies Rufus, who then has access to the camp.

The Rufus in the upper ascent station arrives first at the terminal, where the boxes are loaded for Elysium. While trying to get into one of the boxes, he is caught and put in a cell with Cletus, who he also takes for a clone of Rufus in disguise. He manages to escape from the cell without Cletus. He encounters Janosch and cowboy Dodo of the Resistance who are trying to break into Argus' office to retrieve the promotion codes. When attempting a break-in, however, Argus surprised Cletus and the other resistance members. Rufus, disguised as an Organon, is ordered to haul boxes and can hide in a box that goes to Elysium.

At the same time, the city Rufus comes to the rebel camp and sees that the structures have fundamentally changed: he is no longer the leader, there is a new general and there is a new plan. The resistance tries to shoot Elysium from the sky with a huge cannon before its leadership can give the signal to blow up Deponia. The general turns out to be Seagull, who survived the gunshot wound from the second part. Shortly afterwards, Goal is flushed into the headquarters of the resistance with the sewer Rufus. Rufus finally has the opportunity to give Goal the nucleic acid, but the supposed Goal turns out to be Donna. Seagull then asks Rufus to apologize for the mess that has been caused. The sewer Rufus is ready for this, but the city Rufus vehemently refuses. Due to a fight between the two clones, Seagull loses his nerve and shoots the city Rufus with a laser cannon. The sewer Rufus manages to flee with the injured city Rufus over the ammunition shaft through the cannon barrel.

Meanwhile, Rufus is at the ascent station in front of the high boat and enters Argus' office again to get the ascent codes from the safe. There follows a game of confusion in which Cletus is caught again by the Organons and Rufus grabs a new Cletus costume. But before Rufus can enter the promotion codes, Argus catches him. He has Goal brought and explains that they were able to save her and that Donna was thrown from the cruiser with the broken robot. Shortly afterwards he lets Goal fall from the tower. Rufus jumps after her and holds on to Oppenbot, who is dragged down by him. You can save Goal, but before Rufus hits the ground with Oppenbot, he flies into Seagull, who is threatening the other two Rufi. He pulls it with him and flies off the screen.

Meanwhile the two remaining Rufi try to climb into a tank and flee, but due to another breakdown they clog the rising cannon barrel. Both fall through the open back door into the ammunition shaft, where the shot Rufus then dies in the arms of the other Rufus. At the same time, the last highboat to Elysium takes off. Before the members of the resistance can attack Rufus, Goal comes and tells the story from their point of view: If Rufus had not mobilized the resistance, they would never have reached the point where they are now. Rufus desperately decides to disguise himself as Cletus and shoot everyone together with the tank at the highboat.

Once there, he is generally mistaken for Argus. On the way to the bridge there is a duel with the real Argus, which Rufus wins. Rufus meets Ulysses , the leader of the Organon, for the first time on the bridge of the high boat . When Ulysses learns that the entire Organon is on board, he stops the highboat and immediately initiates the demolition of Deponia. The detonation would hit the boat and kill all passengers. He changed his mind when he saw that his daughter Goal was also on board.

To avert the catastrophe, Argus, Cletus and Rufus volunteer to destroy the transmitter before the firing sequence has finished broadcasting. After a few difficulties, they manage to switch off the transmitter, but all three are then stuck in the rotor: as soon as one moves, the rotor begins to turn and would ultimately drag all three along. Only when Goal joins does the chance arise that one of them can be saved. Rufus quickly realizes that he cannot convince her that he is the real Rufus. Since the highboat runs the risk of crashing due to the failure of the rotor, he describes Cletus as a real Rufus with the reason: "Think about it, how can I be the real Rufus? The real Rufus will never give up, never change and never ... let go". He then lets go of the rotor, Goal saves Cletus and Argus remains behind in the spinning rotor.

In the fall, Rufus meets Barry again, his biggest fan. He explains to him that what he did was the right thing to do. But when he hits a satellite while explaining, Rufus has a fit of laughter and falls laughing from the screen in the direction of Deponia.

The game ends with the Elysian council of elders very concerned about the new situation. Elysium is now totally overpopulated, resources are running out and they may now have to land on Deponia. Goal recommends that they listen to the advice of Cletus, who has assumed Rufus' identity so as not to give himself away. She says Rufus always has the best ideas. While Cletus struggles to present his ideas, Goal goes to a terrace, looks sadly down at Deponia and sighs.

Game principle and technology

In the game, the player navigates Rufus through various screens with a click of the mouse, interacts with other characters and collects and combines objects. Clever combinations are used to solve puzzles that make progress in the game difficult. The dialogues, in which several answers are always possible, offer solution aids, but they are mostly of a cryptic nature.

At certain points the player also has to solve mini-games, which can, however, be skipped. These are mostly very complex puzzles that require little or no objects to be found.

In the later course of the game the player has to deal with three Rufi, between which he can switch back and forth. In some places the direct and indirect exchange of objects between two Rufi is also possible.

Goodbye Deponia received mostly positive reviews. The Metacritic review database aggregates 34 reviews to an average of 80. The specialist magazine Adventure-Treff saw continuity in the series of games in the form of comic situations, humorous dialogues and detailed background graphics. Compared to the previous titles, the narrative speed is higher. The end of the game represents a "satisfactory and worthy end to the trilogy". Some logic gaps in the plot were criticized.

"We have alluded to the title in detail and bow our heads to even crazier ideas and courageous humor."

- Benjamin Braun : gamersglobal.de

“Goodbye Deponia is once again characterized by a real firework of humor, which never shrinks from swipes and other wickedness. In addition, it is seldom so much fun in an adventure to dare pointless combinatorial experiments, just to experience Rufu's witty reaction to them. "

- Matthias Glanznig : Adventurecorner.de

"The title can build on its immensely successful predecessor, comes up with interesting innovations such as the three-part Rufus, and looks as usual excellent in terms of both story and gameplay."

- Florian Zandt : Looki.de

“Wacky humor, weird characters, large scope, depth of puzzles thanks to triple Rufus, funny comic look and an interesting plot; Like its two predecessors, 'Goodbye Deponia' is a full adventure - a worthy conclusion to the trash trilogy. "

- Stefan Mehmke : computerbildspiele.de

"Take care, Deponia! I will miss you."

- Felix Schütz : PC Games
