Dows Dunham

Dows Dunham (born June 1, 1890 in Irvington-on-Hudson, New York , † January 10, 1984 in Boston , Massachusetts ) was an American Egyptologist .

Dows Dunham is in Irvington-on-Hudson ( New York born). From 1909 to 1913 he studied art history at Harvard University . He was tutored by George Andrew Reisner , who offered him a position and who made him one of his principal assistants. Dunham has been a member of numerous expeditions to Egypt and Sudan since 1914 , mainly working in the team of George Andrew Reisner. In Giza , for example, he worked in the grave of Hetepheres I and was responsible for the precise documentation of its finds. He was curator at the Egyptian department of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston until 1956 and after his retirement he published a large part of George Andrew Reisner's excavations, whose excavation documents are kept in the Museum of Fine Arts.

In 1954 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1979 he was awarded the Gold Medal by the Archaeological Institute of America .
