Chaos on Deponia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Chaos auf Deponia is a point-and-click adventure from the German developer and publisher Daedalic Entertainment . The German original version was published in October 2012 as the successor to Deponia and as the second part of a four-part game series by the author and Daedalic co-founder Jan Müller-Michaelis . In 2013, the game was awarded the German Computer Game Prize in the “Best German Game” category.

action

The game is directly linked to the events of the first part. The player slips back into the role of the antihero Rufus, who tries everything to get to the Elysium space station, to save the junk planet Deponia, but above all to improve his own living conditions. At his side are the Elysian woman Goal, with whom he has already fallen in love with Deponia , the doctor and hobbyist Doc, and the garbage ship captain Bozo.

The game begins with an introductory sequence in which Rufus tells the story of the last part - somewhat heroically transfigured. When he's finished, we learn of another attempt on his part to get to Elysium, while Goal and Cletus are also on their way there in a high boat. However, this attempt fails, Goal is thrown outside and after an attempted rescue by Rufus, the two fall again down on Deponia.

There they are fished out of the sea by Doc and the scrap dealer Bozo. In his practice, Doc then explains to Rufus that Goal was badly injured in the fall, so he has to operate immediately. During the operation, however, Goal's consciousness is split into three parts, the aristocratic lady goal, the spirited riot goal and the naive baby goal. To avoid long-term damage, Rufus has to convince all three parts to come back to Doc with him to put them back together again.

During his mission, Rufus encounters a lot of bizarre and wacky characters, particularly the disorganized crime, a gangster connection led by the mad Donna, and the resistance group against the Organon led by the mumbling Janosch.

Little by little, Rufus conquers the heart of all three goals:

  • He has to defeat the riot goal in a fight and thus prove his strength and courage,
  • He has to run Lady Goal to a romantic meal for two and
  • for baby goal Rufus has to join the resistance.

Since Baby-Goal then hangs on Janosch's mumbling lips, Rufus has to come up with a real plan against Organon in order to become the group's "spiritual" leader himself. This plan calls for attacking one of the towers that will be used to blow up Deponia and, in general, replacing Chaos Cletus with Rufus, so that he can travel to Elysium with Goal to spread the truth there. In addition, the aim is to prevent this tower from being used as a weapon of mass destruction against the Landfill population. But as soon as he has brought all of Goal's parts to their senses so that they are ready for a life-saving operation, the resistance besieged Doc's clinic because Janosch wants to use Goal's consciousness to fight the Organon. Rufus makes it inside where disorganized crime (Donna and her two thugs) holds Doc and Goal trapped. Rufus can turn off the three crooks, while Lady-Goal's consciousness is transferred into Donna's body.

However, he learns that Donna-Goal has betrayed him and is returning to Elysium with Cletus to survive the Deponia explosion. It turns out that Elysium is just a space station with the help of which a new planet is to be reached that allows a fresh start. However, since Elysium needs energy for the journey, Deponia has to be blown up, otherwise Elysium will simply fall back onto the littered soil of Deponia after a while. And Lady-Goal, now in Donna's body, is not ready to give up Elysium. She disappears and leaves Rufus with the conflict that he cannot have both: He cannot save Deponia and its inhabitants and at the same time enjoy the longed-for happiness on Elysium. In view of the impending apocalypse, Rufus now goes in search of Donna-Goal with Bozo, Doc and Goal's remaining, idealistic and good-natured two parts. They track them down and Rufus is able to sink her submarine with the help of the torpedo dolphins of the Resistance, but is knocked out.

When he comes to near the tower, the rebels have already started their attack and are now fighting a hopeless fight against the superior strength of the Organon. When Rufus gets into the tower, he meets Cletus, who is fiddling with the bomb controls. Donna stands in the room without consciousness, by inserting riot goals Datasette she comes to consciousness again. Riot Goal does not get along argumentatively, but at least tangibly with Lady Goal (now in the original body). A fight breaks out, between the goal thirds and between Rufus and Cletus. It turns out that Cletus prevented the bomb tower from being used. In the end, he wants Deponia to be blown up, but assumes that it will also be carried out if he speaks out in favor of the Deponians - he just wants to wash his innocent hands. The situation is similar to that of the high boat in the first part, Rufus lands on a railing and Goal no longer trusts him because he activated the countdown and Cletus ultimately prevented the Organon from implementing his plan. All that Rufus remains is riot goals datasette, lady and baby goals leave him at Cletus' side and he falls into the depths.

When he ends up with the rebels, all they can do is escape from the tower, which thanks to Cletus will be the only one to be destroyed by the bomb. When they withdraw, however, Lady Goal joins them again, after all she has decided against the Organon's plans. Cletus was probably only enough with part of Goal, but Lady-Goal has secretly exchanged Baby-Goal's consciousness for Donna's. All Cletus remains is the psychopathic leader of Unorganized Crime, while Rufus and his companions watch the explosion of the bomb tower from a safe distance.

Game principle and technology

In the game, the player navigates Rufus through various screens with a click of the mouse, interacts with other characters and collects and combines objects. Clever combinations are used to solve puzzles that make progress in the game difficult. The dialogues, in which several answers are always possible, offer solution aids, but they are mostly of a cryptic nature. At certain points the player also has to solve mini-games, which can, however, be skipped. These are mostly very complex puzzles that require little or no objects to be found.

Production notes

An international version with English dubbing appeared in November 2012. As the successor and third part of the series, Goodbye Deponia was released on October 15, 2013 , which was originally intended to conclude the series. On March 1st, 2016 Daedalic finally released a fourth part with Deponia Doomsday .
