Minecraft - Builders & Biomes with the subtitle A Minecraft Bordgame is a board game by the game designer Ulrich Blum , which was published by Ravensburger Spieleverlag in 2019 . The game is based on the successful Minecraft computer game and accordingly uses graphic and playful elements from it. This is primarily a resource management and building game , are integrated into the other game mechanics like fighting mode against monsters.

Theme and equipment

The game Minecraft - Builders & Biomes was thematically based on the computer game Minecraft and accordingly takes place in a virtual world in which the players play the role of computer game characters, build the skins, buildings and defend themselves against random monsters.

In addition to multilingual instructions, the game material consists of 64 building and monster cards as well as 16 weapon tiles from which the playing field is laid out, a block base, 64 wooden blocks in five colors (wood, sand, stone, obsidian and emerald), a construction aid for the resource pile and four player boards, four game figures, four sets of 5 weapon cards each in the player's colors and one experience point marker each.

Style of play

Game preparation

Before the start of the game, the building and monster cards are shuffled and laid out face down to form a playing field of four by four rows of cards, with each of the 16 stacks consisting of four cards. The 16 weapon tiles are placed face down at the ends of the rows and columns. Each player chooses one of the four player boards, one pawn with a stand, and a set of five weapon cards and an experience marker. The player places the player board in front of him, the experience point marker is placed on the scoring track on the point “0”. The player figures are placed on the middle crossing point of the playing field. With the help of the assembly aid, a cube is built from the 64 building blocks on the block base, whereby the building blocks are built up randomly.

Game flow

Minecraft - Builders & Biomes is played starting with a starting player (according to the rules of the game, the one who “last found diamonds in Minecraft” or, alternatively, the youngest player) over a previously undefined number of rounds, each consisting of two actions per player. Each player whose turn it is may take two actions from five different options. In principle, each type of action can only be carried out once.

Alternatives per turn
  • Take 0 to 2 blocks from the building block
  • move your own figure 0 to 2 spaces (explore the upper world)
  • build a structure
  • attack a monster
  • take a gun

The active player can choose from the five options and carry out the two actions in any order. The following actions are possible:

  • Take building blocks: the player can take up to two building blocks from the building block. He may only select stones that are exposed and that have at least two sides visible in addition to the top. Stones from the topmost layer, but also from the layers below, may be used if the conditions are right.
  • Explore the upper world: the active player may move his own figure 0 to 2 spaces, whereby a point of intersection between the building and monster cards and the weapon tiles is considered as a space. Then all 4 cards or tiles between which he ends his turn are revealed. If some of them are already face-up, they remain face-up and if there are no more cards, none are refilled.
  • Building: A player may build a building if his figure is in the vicinity of the corresponding face-up card and he has the raw materials required for the construction. The green emerald bricks can be used for any other color. If a structure is built, the player places the card anywhere on his player board and can also build over other structures. If experience points are given on the newly built structure, the player can settle these directly.
  • Attacking monsters: A player may attack a monster if his figure is in the vicinity of the corresponding face-up monster card. If he decides to fight, he shuffles his weapon cards and reveals the cards on the top. If these correspond to or exceed the number of hearts (life points) of the monster, the monster is defeated and he takes it, otherwise it remains open. The player can settle the experience points indicated on the defeated monster directly. In addition, a monster card can show a “meat” symbol or a symbol for the final scoring. If a monster has a "meat" symbol, it can be surrendered for any further turn at any time, whereby the player can then also choose an option that he has already used once during the current turn.
  • Take a weapon : A player may take a weapon if his figure is in the vicinity of the corresponding face-up weapon tile. These can be different types of weapons: swords, bows (which allow you to uncover another tile in combat), a gold pick (which gives the player two additional experience points), a pickax (which gives the player an additional building block ) or TNT explosives (with a high attack power, but which can only be used once in the game).

After one of the first three layers of the building block has been completely dismantled, one of the three evaluations is made. These follow the scoring cards A to C, whereby in the first scoring (A) the respective neighboring biome types are scored, in the second scoring (B) the raw material types of the buildings and in the third scoring (C) the building types.

End of game and scoring

The game ends immediately after the third scoring round with a final scoring, in which the monster cards are scored that have a symbol for the final scoring. These each give a fixed number of victory points for certain buildings or biomes. The player who has the most points at the end of the final scoring wins the game. In the event of a tie, the player with the most blocks left in his supply wins, and if there is still a tie, all those involved win.
