Florian Dombois

Florian Dombois (born December 19, 1966 in Berlin ) is a German artist. Dombois deals with time, land forms, tectonics, scientific and technical fictions in different representations and publication formats.

Florian Dombois studied geophysics and philosophy in Berlin , Kiel and Hawaii and graduated in theoretical geophysics. With Hartmut Böhme at the Humboldt University in Berlin he received his doctorate with the cultural studies thesis “What is an earthquake?”. Since 1994 he has been involved in various projects with the representation of seismological phenomena in an artistic context, including at the Berlin Academy of the Arts . His works include sound and space installations, but also happenings and performances. For twenty years from the 1990s he was committed to "art as research" and to the artistic reclamation of sonification. From 1999 to 2005 he was an artistic and scientific assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Media Communication in St. Augustin. Dombois is the author of several specialist articles, essays and numerous lectures and guest lectureships at art colleges, research institutions and universities (including Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Artcenter Los Angeles, ATR Kyoto, MIT Cambridge).

In 2003 Florian Dombois received a call to the Bern University of the Arts , where he set up the Y Institute. Since autumn 2011 he has been a professor at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and heads the research focus on transdisciplinarity .
