Art Museum Chur

The Bündner Kunstmuseum is the most important art institution in the canton of Graubünden . It is based in the historic Villa Planta as well as in the extension building from 2016 and mainly shows exhibits by Graubünden and Swiss artists. It is an institution of the Canton of Graubünden. The Bündner Kunstverein is responsible for the temporary exhibitions and the Bündner Kunstsammlung Foundation is the owner of the art collection.

history

In 1900 the Bündner Kunstverein began to build up its own art collection, which specifically addressed the issues of the cultural situation in Graubünden, such as the impact of the surrounding mountainous landscape or the interplay between migration and tourism. In 1919 the Bündner Kunstmuseum Chur was set up in the neoclassical Villa Planta on the initiative of the Bündner Kunstverein. From 1927 onwards, the natural history bundles housed there found their domicile next to the Villa Planta in the newly built nature and national park museum, while the villa was adapted to the needs of an art museum. From 1987 to 1989 Villa Planta was rebuilt and restored by the architects Peter Zumthor , Peter Calonder and Hans-Jörg Ruch . From 2014 to 2016, an extension by the architects Barozzi / Veiga was built next to the Villa Planta in place of the former nature museum.

The Bündner Kunstmuseum has been managed by Stephan Kunz since October 1st, 2011 .

The collection

There is a special focus on local art. The Bündner Kunstmuseum houses several works by Chur-born Angelika Kauffmann , who was one of the most important artists of the 18th century. The artist family from Bergell , including Giovanni Giacometti and their sons Alberto and Diego, as well as Augusto , who is distantly related, is also represented in the collection with extensive groups of works. With important works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Hermann Scherer , Albert Müller and Paul Camenisch , the expressionism phase is a special focus of the collection. Important positions from the second half of the 20th century include Alois Carigiet , Matias Spescha , HR Giger , Not Vital and Zilla Leutenegger .

In the field of contemporary art, the collection reflects the diversity of contemporary art with works by Richard Long , Markus Raetz and Roman Signer . Particular attention is paid to artists who deal with the medium of photography, such as Hans Danuser , Gaudenz Signorell , Katharina Vonow , Jules Spinatsch or Ester Vonplon .

The collection includes around 8,000 works from all areas of the visual arts from the 18th century to the present day.

Exhibitions

Parallel to its own collection, the Bündner Kunstmuseum shows temporary changing exhibitions. In addition to the presentation of historical and contemporary artists, thematic group exhibitions can also be seen time and again. The art museum's laboratory serves as a small art hall within the museum. The museum regularly invites artists to develop new works for this exhibition space.

architecture

Villa Planta

Villa Planta, named after the builder Jacques Ambrosius von Planta , was built in 1874–1875 by the architect Johannes Ludwig as a private residence. In 1898 Jacques Ambrosius von Planta sold the villa to the Rhaetian Railway , which from 1919 rented it to the Canton of Graubünden for cultural purposes. In 1957 the property was acquired by the Canton of Graubünden. The neoclassical building on Bahnhofstrasse in Chur has a representative front with a portico supported by columns. The two sphinxes on the stair strings, the Pompeian paintings in the former salon and the golden painting on the dome in Byzantine style refer to the client's activity as a merchant in Alexandria, Egypt. The climax of this "Orientalism" was a crescent moon on the top of the dome. The villa was restored and expanded in 1987/89 under the direction of the architects Peter Zumthor , Peter Calonder and Hans-Jörg Ruch. In 2014–2016 the listed Palladian villa was restored by the architectural office Gredig-Walser and adapted to the current needs of a modern museum.

Extension

In 2011, an international architecture competition was announced, which was won by the architectural office Estudio Barozzi / Veiga from Barcelona . Your project replaces the former nature museum and impresses with its precise and clear placement in the architectural environment.
