The Riyadh Metro (officially Riyadh Public Transport Project , RPTP for short ) is a subway system under construction in Riyadh , the capital of Saudi Arabia , worth a total of around $ 22.5 billion (17 billion euros ) should cost. The project was planned by the High Commission for the Development of Arriyadh ( High Commission for the Development of Riyadh ). The plans were approved by the Saudi Arabian Council of Ministers on April 23, 2013. The result of the tender was announced on July 29, 2013. Three international consortia were awarded the contract. Complete completion is planned for 2021. The project is the largest single infrastructure measure in the history of Saudi Arabia.

Project progress

The result of the tender was announced on July 29, 2013. In addition to the six lines of the network, this invitation to tender also included four stations that had been specially advertised in packages of two. The stations King Abdullah Financial Center and Olaya as well as Al-Hukm Palace and Western Station were put out to tender together, with the contract for the first two and two lines going to the BACS consortium led by the American company Bechtel . This consortium is u. a. also Siemens and AECOM involved. The latter two stations and one line went to the Al-Riyadh New Mobility Consortium (ANM) led by the Italian Ansaldo STS . The FAST consortium, led by the Spanish FCC group , was awarded the contract for three lines .

The “first groundbreaking” was celebrated on April 4, 2014.

On February 23, 2016, the completion of the first Siemens train was announced in Vienna . The trains built by Siemens have been parked at Vienna's north-west station since May 2017 .

Test drives have been taking place since April 4, 2018. Partial commissioning of the subway network should take place in 2019, the complete opening in 2021.

Stations

International architecture competitions were announced for three main transfer stations - the so-called Iconic Stations . The selected designs are from:

  • Gerber Architects (Germany) for the Olaya Metro Station
  • Snøhetta (Norway), for the Qasr Al Hokm Downtown Metro Station
  • Zaha Hadid (Great Britain), for the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) Metro Station

Fully automatic operation is planned for the entire subway network. Alstom plans to supply 69 Metropolis trains, each 36 meters long, for 1.2 billion euros and the signaling technology . There should be two classes of car in the trains , as well as separate areas for families and individuals. Alstom trains are built in Katowice , Poland. Siemens will supply 74 Inspiro trains for lines 1 (45 units with four wagons) and 2 (29 units with two wagons). These have an aluminum car body and can travel up to 90 km / h. Chassis, power supply, brakes and doors have been adapted for the special climatic conditions in Riyadh. From Bombardier 47 units come with two cars of the type Innovia 300 for the M3.

A consortium made up of Alstom , Ansaldo STS and Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (FS) has received the contract to operate lines 3–6 for the first 12 years. The contract has a value of 2.5 billion euros .
