Société nationale d'électricité de la RDC (SNEL) is a state-owned energy supplier in the Democratic Republic of the Congo , based in the capital Kinshasa . SNEL has been a limited liability company since 2010.

history

The company was founded by the government by regulation DPR No. 67-391 on September 23, 1967 to meet the country's energy needs. In May 1970, SNEL was entrusted with the task of managing, building and financial control of the Inga project, the largest hydroelectric power station on the lower reaches of the Congo . In 1972 the Inga I. and 1982 Inga II. Power plants at the Inga Dam went into operation and supply both the capital Kinshasa and the surrounding area with electricity.

In the special edition of the Official Journal of the Democratic Republic of the Congo of December 29, 2010 it was published that SNEL has been changed to a limited liability company and is now responsible for the generation, transmission, distribution and marketing of electrical energy across the country.

In May 2013 it became known that a third, the Grand Inga (project name) would be added to the two existing Inga systems . After completion of the expansion, which is scheduled to start in October 2015, Grand Inga will be the largest hydropower plant in the world.
