Stanislaw Grocholski
Stanisław Grocholski (born June 6, 1858 in Żołynia near Łańcut , † February 26, 1932 in Buffalo ) was a Polish painter , mainly in Munich and Buffalo.
He studied painting first in Kraków from 1877 to 1880 under Władysław Łuszczkiewicz and Jan Matejko , then in Vienna under Carl Wurzinger , in Paris under Léon Bonnat and under Sándor Wagner at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts .
After graduating, he stayed in Munich for 20 years. He bought a house there in the Pasing I villa colony , where he opened a painting school in 1891. His students included u. a. Gustaw Gwozdecki , Karol Kowalski-Wierusz, Henryk Szczygliński, Soter Małachowski Jaxa. His house soon became a meeting place for Polish artists.
From 1880 to 1900 the artist showed his pictures in the Glaspalast (Munich) . He also took part in salons in Warsaw, Lviv and Krakow. Grocholski also provided templates for woodcut reproductions that appeared in the gazebo and in Polish magazines "Kłosy" and " Tygodnik Ilustrowany ". He painted portraits and genre pictures that found a wide audience. In addition to German folklore, it also showed scenes from the lives of Polish farmers and Jews.
In 1901 he came to the USA , where he settled in Milwaukee and then in Buffalo .
