Fomento de Construcciones y Contratas (FCC) is a Spanish group of companies that is mainly active as a construction company with a focus on infrastructure projects, disposal service providers , water suppliers and cement manufacturers .

Companies

The group of companies was created in March 1992 through the merger of the companies Construcciones y Contratas, SA from Madrid and Fomento de Obras y Construcciones, SA from Barcelona . FCC is the market leader among Spanish waste disposal service providers. The group operates in more than 35 countries and in 2017 employed over 50,000 people. In 2017, FCC had a turnover of 5.8 billion euros, 45% of which was outside of Spain, and an EBITDA of 815.4 million euros. The annual surplus amounted to 188.0 million euros.

Like almost all Spanish companies, FCC has suffered from the Spanish financial and economic crisis since 2007. In 2013 and 2014, she ran programs to reduce costs and reduce debt. The restructuring was completed in 2015 and 2016. In 2013, Microsoft founder Bill Gates acquired 6% of the shares. Even George Soros participated in the end of 2013 with a 3% stake in the company. In December 2014, Carlos Slim Helú acquired 25.6% of the shares as part of a capital increase. The Spanish businesswoman Esther Koplowitz held a majority stake in the predecessor company Construcciones y Contratas . Their share has since fallen to below 20%. She does not participate directly in the management, but rather defends her interests through her position as Vice-President of the Board of Directors.

The chairman of the 15-person board of directors (Consejo de Administración) is Esther Alcocer Koplowitz, the daughter of Esther Koplowitz. Her two other daughters Alicia and Carmen Alcocer Koplowitz are also on the Board of Directors. Carlos Slim and persons delegated by him have 7 seats. Another 4 seats are taken by Pablo Colio Abril, the Consejero delegado (CEO) and 3 persons who are independent according to the statutes.

Products

In addition to construction, the company is also involved in the business areas of garbage collection and landfill, street cleaning, water supply, wastewater treatment, cement production, real estate development and management, operation of parking lots, street furniture, passenger traffic, vehicle surveillance and airport operations.

In 2006, FCC took over the Austrian construction company Alpine Holding . Alpine went bankrupt in 2013.
