Tatjana Doll (* 1970 in Burgsteinfurt ) is a contemporary German painter .

Life

As a master student of Dieter Krieg , she completed her studies at the Düsseldorf Art Academy in 1998 . From 2005 to 2006 she held a visiting professorship for painting at the Kunsthochschule Weißensee , Berlin. After working in New York, Istanbul, Johannesburg and at the Accademia Tedesca Villa Massimo in Rome, Tatjana Doll now lives and works in Berlin. In 2009 she was appointed to the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe to specialize in painting.

The motifs in Tatjana Doll's pictures are mainly everyday objects that "structure and influence our lives without us consciously perceiving their effect". Paper cups, suitcases, electronic devices, transport vehicles or cars are often displayed larger than life, in a realistic manner. The objects are in the center of the picture and are precisely analyzed using the means of painting. This concentration on the individual thing makes it possible to take a certain distance from the automated gaze, to look at the objects anew and to research them in their socio-political contexts. "Doll's painting starts with social reality as well as with the question of the images and signs for processes of this reality and their subjective appropriation".

Painting style and material

Tatjana Doll, Ferrari F430, 2005

In her pictures Tatjana Doll examines the possibilities and limits of painting as well as its potential to " reveal social processes and their perception ". The predominantly realistic style of painting gains particular importance due to the oversized size of the works. The artist often treats a motif in series of pictures and thus brings chance into play as an important design element.

Tatjana Doll expresses the contrast between perfection and disturbance, wholeness and rupture in her art. The material plays an important role in this. The artist works with lacquer paints , whose glossy surface often gets cracks, puddles of paint and waves.

Pictograms

The characteristic interplay of the method of representation and the content comes to the fore in the pictogram images. The uniqueness of the standardized sign is transformed into the subjectivity of the artistic statement through the painterly gesture . Through the unpredictable and the irregular in the representation, the anonymous schematic signs acquire individual , lively features. In this way, its fixed framework is broken and its commanding or restrictive function is dissolved. Instead, the pictograms now have a narrative effect : they tell stories that often have a socio-political connotation and are characterized by a critical attitude . In the images, which combine texts with visual motifs, Tatjana Doll lets the two semantic systems interact and merge into a common visual message.

Overpainting

Tatjana Doll, AD Fe Real, 2010

In the “RIP” series, Tatjana Doll takes works from earlier art history apart. The resulting pictures are less replicas or reproductions than independent studies of the selected motifs and the painting itself. In this case, your practice can be described as “overpainting” (see Ulrich Loock). The existing motifs are given new appearances and meanings. The process of overpainting consists in “that Doll's painting drives out the original and brings it back to life in the one that it only subsequently assigns to itself”.

When Tatjana Doll overpaints Richard Prince's cowboy pictures in the “AD” series, she lets the varnish “flow out” of the contours of the figures or “dumps” the recognizable figures extensively with different colors. These images give an insight into the subjectivity of artistic practice, the meaning of symbols and the functioning of one's own perception. With this, Tatjana Doll once again questions painting and “its aesthetic, creative foundations, but also the relationships between image , image motif and its reality in a social context”.
