history

Kunstkraftwerk Leipzig - CENTER FOR DIGITAL ART, 2019

In 1900 the power station was built on the site of the tram station to ensure the traction power supply for the new electric trams in the west of Leipzig . The owner was the Great Leipzig Tram. The power plant had five steam engines powered by lignite, each with a 220 kW direct current generator , a 1100 Ah buffer battery, as well as a rail connection to the Plagwitz train station for the delivery of lignite and removal of the power plant ash. The conversion to a heating and power station as part of the VEB Energiekombinat Leipzig began in 1964. Five old boilers were dismantled and replaced by three KWK2 steam generators (6.5 tons of raw lignite per hour each, with a mechanical moving grate). In 1992 the power plant was shut down. In 2012 the building and the site were bought by Markus Löffler, Professor of Medical Statistics in Leipzig and the architect Ulrich Maldinger. After the majority of the technical systems were dismantled and the roof and infrastructure were renovated, it opened in 2015 as a power plant for art exhibitions, concerts and events.

Immersive Art Show: WERK in Progress (by Immersive Art Factory)

Today the Kunstkraftwerk is a center for digital art and culture, contemporary design. The focus is on the immersive video installations, 360 degree projections that fill the entire room. The viewer immerses himself in the works, moves around the room and experiences the shows using multimedia.

Immersive art is a new form of art experiment that aims to experience works of art holistically. With projections, images and music, the viewer becomes part of the work. This creates a new approach and enables a broad audience to approach art. In addition to the video installations, the Kunstkraftwerk also sees itself as an open space for exhibitions and installations, including for young artists. The exchange beyond art takes place through scientific lectures and interactive educational offers.
