Work

In her work, Johanna Reich combines contemporary techniques such as photography, video, performance or holographic projections with traditional media such as painting or sculpture. A central element of her work is her performative acting in front of the camera. In her early works, Johanna Reich applied the strategy of performance in a more original sense, with her body clearly being the subject of the camera. Her performative video works are characterized by a strongly painterly and media-reflective component. By examining models from the history of art and film, they sound out the relationship between static and moving images and investigate the possibility of constructing reality in the image recorded and transported by apparatus.

A recurring motif in Johanna Reich's work is the disappearance of the world determined by the media, the withdrawal of the artist herself, which she repeatedly moves into the picture, sometimes with reference to art historical models of modernism such as Lucio Fontana or Kasimir Malewitsch . She was u. a. awarded the Japanese Excellence Prize for Media Arts , the NRW Prize for Media Art , the Konrad von Soest Prize and the Nam June Paik Award . Her work is represented in numerous exhibitions and collections, including a. in the Goetz Collection , the Museum of Concrete Art Ingolstadt and the Jerry Speyer Collection .
