Ballet director

Bernd Schindowski was ballet director and chief choreographer at the Musiktheater im Revier, Gelsenkirchen, from 1978 to 2011.

Schindowski created up to four productions for his dance company per season. His willingness to deal with the large repertoire of dance in its various styles did not diminish. In his pieces he guaranteed surprises in terms of content, built on irony, jokes and deeper meaning. His handwriting was based on both classical and contemporary dance techniques.

Since 1978 he has also choreographed ballets, which are also aimed specifically at children's audiences. It was not about “fairy tale ballets”, but about topics from everyday life that interest children, or topics with didactic intent.

In 1998 the annual series Heavy Music - Cool Love began , in which Bernd Schindowski created a dance production aimed at young audiences from the age of twelve in almost every season. In the production, the company danced together with young people. In these productions, the young people not only danced, they choreographed, made music, composed music, acted, wrote texts, created sets and costumes. The aim of this series was to bring theater culture closer to young people. Especially those who cannot access the theater from home.

In addition, a number of choreography workshops were set up every year in which the dancers of the ensemble presented their own pieces. Several successful choreographers and ballet directors who now work all over the world have outgrown this experimental forum.

Due to the company's high level of commitment, the state of North Rhine-Westphalia decided in 1989 to provide special financial support for the ballet at the Musiktheater im Revier.

There have been a number of successful guest performances at home and abroad, including: Week of Modern Dance at the Cologne Opera House, Basel dances , Wiesbaden May Festival , Ludwigsburg Castle Festival , Deutsche Oper Berlin, opening of the International Summer Academy of Dance in Cologne, New Dance Meeting NRW , Westphalian Hamm Music Festival , Emblemata Mönchengladbach , Herrenhausen Castle Festival in Hanover, opening ceremony for the festivities 1000 Years of Potsdam . Ballet Schindowski also gave guest performances at the state presentations of North Rhine-Westphalia abroad: Portugal (Lisbon, Gulbenkian Foundation), Czechoslovakia (Brno, State Theater - Prague, National Theater), France (European Association of Cities in Strasbourg).

Several TV stations reported on Bernd Schindowski's work and broadcast the TV recordings of the ballets Reise nach Kythera and Ubu Roi .

In the 2010/2011 season, Schindowski ended his 33-year career as a ballet director at the Musiktheater im Revier and retired.
