Mareike Wegener

Mareike Wegener (* 1983 in Borken ) is a German film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Mareike Wegener was born in the Westphalian Münsterland and grew up near the Dutch border, where her father, the musician Eckhard Wegener, ran a jazz bar. After graduating from high school, she worked as an assistant editor for a large film and television studio in Hamburg , before starting to study audiovisual media at the Cologne Art Academy in 2003 . As part of this course, the first directorial work was done, including a. the short film Hair Pieces (2005). Wegener later studied documentary film and media studies at The New School in New York before completing her studies in Germany with a diploma. Her thesis, the documentary Al Hansen. The Matchstick Traveler (2008) premiered in January 2009 in the New York Anthology Film Archives .

In 2009, Wegener received the Gerd Ruge grant to research her documentary film project Mark Lombardi - Art and Conspiracy , which was filmed in New York the following year. The film about the artist Mark Lombardi , who died in 2000 , who in his diagrammatic drawings interwoven the verifiable connections between politics, (financial) economy and organized crime to create a threatening beauty, celebrated its world premiere in 2012 at the Max Ophüls Prize and subsequently failed at Sheffield Doc / Fest, Planete + Doc (Warsaw), Brooklyn Film Festival and Zurich Film Festival . In the USA the film was shown under its English title Mark Lombardi - Death-Defying Acts of Art and Conspiracy at the Museum of Modern Art . The film was released in German cinemas in May 2012.

Together with Hannes Lang and Carmen Losmann , Wegener founded the production cooperative Petrolio in 2012. Wegener and Lang, who have been working together since their studies, completed the feature documentary I Want To See The Manager in 2014 , which celebrated its festival premiere at the Danish CPH: DOX and opened in German cinemas on September 3, 2015. In 2019, Petrolio released the short documentary Riafn , which was directed by Hannes Lang and premiered at the Visions du Réel . In 2020 Carmen Losmann's full-length documentary Oeconomia followed , which premiered in the Forum section of the 70th Berlin International Film Festival .
