Bernhard Kontarsky

Bernhard Kontarsky (born April 26, 1937 in Iserlohn ) is a German conductor, pianist and university professor.

Life

Bernhard Kontarsky studied at the Cologne University of Music and Dance . In 1964 he began his conducting career as Kapellmeister at the State Theater in Stuttgart . In 1965 he received the support award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for music . From 1981 Kontarsky was Professor of Piano and Head of the Studio for New Music at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts .

Kontarsky is a recognized specialist in new music . He has conducted the world premieres of El Rey de Harlem by Hans Werner Henze (1982), The Exhaustion of the World by Mauricio Kagel , Don Quijote de la Mancha by Hans Zender (1993), Sansibar by Eckehard Mayer (1994) and the German premiere of the opera The Walls by Adriana Hölszky (2000). In 1991 he made a highly acclaimed CD recording of the opera The Soldiers by Bernd Alois Zimmermannbefore, a work which he had already participated in as a répétiteur in 1965 . He is an honorary member of the Bernd Alois Zimmermann Society.

Kontarsky is the younger brother of the pianists Aloys Kontarsky and Alfons Kontarsky , with whom he occasionally played three grand pianos .
