Dieter Schönbach

Dieter Schönbach (born February 18, 1931 in Stolp in West Pomerania ; † May 28, 2012 in Bochum ) was a German composer and director .

Life

Together with his family he had to leave his Pomeranian homeland in 1945 and then came to Niebüll in what was then the district of Südtondern . There he attended the Friedrich-Paulsen-Schule and graduated from secondary school in 1949 to study music.

Musical training and work

Dieter Schönbach began his studies in 1949 at the Northwest German Music Academy in Detmold in the subjects of composition and choral conducting. His teacher for composition was Günter Bialas and for choral conducting Kurt Thomas . He then moved to Freiburg im Breisgau , where he continued studying with Wolfgang Fortner at the music college there .

After completing his studies, he was appointed director of drama music at the Schauspielhaus Bochum in 1959 , having attracted attention with a string quartet in 1957. In 1961 he received the North Rhine-Westphalia sponsorship award for composers. In 1969 he went to Münster / Westphalia to the theater there. Here he brought out the first multimedia opera, a new musical art form, The Story of a Fire . His work was varied. He not only composed operas and musicals, but also instrumental music, etc. a. Piano pieces and chamber music. In 1977 his musical Kaspar, beware, premiered in Münster with Renate Axt in a leading role. In 1973 he was finally appointed to Basel . His musical achievements also made him internationally known. In 1959 he was awarded the 1st prize of the Sozieta Italiana di Musica contemporanea (SIMC) for his work Canticum Psalmi Resurretionis , which premiered in Rome . In 1960 he received the music prize of the city of Recklinghausen and in 1962 he received a scholarship from the Villa Massimo in Rome. Finally, in 1961, he received the Critics 'Prize of the City of Vienna for his incidental music for Albert Camus ' play Caligula .

He was the owner of the publishing house multimedia works of art Dieter Schönbach. He died on May 28, 2012 in Bochum.
