Karl-Heinz Petzinka (born January 7, 1956 in Bocholt ) is a German architect and professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy , class architecture.

Life

Karl-Heinz Petzinka studied architecture at RWTH Aachen University from 1976 and graduated in 1982 with the academic degree "Diplom-Ingenieur". In 1981 he received the sponsorship award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for young artists in the field of architecture. After his first professional years 1982–1983 as a freelance architect in the OM Ungers office in Cologne , he worked from 1983 to 1985 as assistant to Prof. W. Döring at RWTH Aachen University. From 1986 to 1987 he was a scholarship holder of the Deutsche Akademie Rome Villa Massimo in the category architecture. From 1988 Karl-Heinz Petzinka taught design at the University of Wuppertal , in 1994 he was appointed professor at the chair for design and building technology at the TU Darmstadt , where he taught until 2007. During this time, Petzinka also held visiting professorships at the Düsseldorf Art Academy and at RWTH Aachen University. At the same time, in 1994, together with Thomas Pink, he founded the “Petzinka Pink Architects” office with locations in Düsseldorf and Berlin . The office was later renamed “Petzinka Pink Technological Architecture” in order to reflect the self-defined architectural orientation in the office name.

The renovation of the Centennial Hall in Bochum in 2002/2003 is one of the projects in which this concept, in this case the addition of the historical building fabric and building construction with technological and reactivating elements, was implemented. At the same time, the Centennial Hall marks the opening of a new field of work in Petzinka's oeuvre with the conversion of existing buildings, often also listed buildings, in the sense of a transformation architecture. In 2002 he took on a visiting professorship at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf , and in 2004 at RWTH Aachen University.

In October 2004, Karl-Heinz Petzinka took over as chairman of the management of the property company THS Group with headquarters in the converted Nordstern colliery in Gelsenkirchen . Karl-Heinz Petzinka left the company in November 2011. On July 27, 2011 the “Immobilien-Zeitung” reported: “Karl-Heinz Petzinka has been released from his position as Managing Director of Evonik Immobilien with immediate effect. This was confirmed by a company spokeswoman. One did not want to comment on reasons for the process. "

In addition, he was appointed in 2007 by RUHR.2010 GmbH, the sponsoring company for the 2010 Capital of Culture year , as one of four program directors. Karl-Heinz Petzinka is responsible for the topic “City of Opportunities” (architecture, urban development and the fine arts).

Since 2008 he has also been a professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, in the “Architecture” class. Karl-Heinz Petzinka also acts as judges on a national and international level. Since 2012, Karl-Heinz Petzinka has also been a visiting professor at the Universidad Austral de Chile on the subject of systems, urban and planning in non-European countries.

On April 24, 2017, Petzinka was elected as the fourth architect to be rector of the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

He will take office on August 1, 2017 and is elected for a term of four years.

The most famous architectural projects by Karl-Heinz Petzinka include the MIPIM Award- winning Düsseldorfer Stadttor , the CDU federal office in Berlin ( Konrad-Adenauer-Haus ), the representation of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia at the federal government in Berlin and the renovation of the Centennial Hall in Bochum becomes the festival venue of the RuhrTriennale .

Karl-Heinz Petzinka has also planned and implemented buildings in the fields of commerce, public authorities, administration and private residences. In Gelsenkirchen he was involved in the construction of the Hercules of Gelsenkirchen , the Nordstern video art center Sammlung Goetz / nbk (neue.berliner.kunstverein), the planning of the urban development project "Stadtquartier am Schloß Horst", and the revitalization of the workshop building of the Nordstern colliery. The revitalization of the red hall in Düsseldorf was also one of his tasks.
