“Parkautobahn A42” describes a project that was started as part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010 . The A 42 running through the middle of the Emscher Landscape Park is to become an integrated element of the urban cultural landscape of the Ruhr Metropolis over the next 20 years.

Its function as a central development for the Emscher Landscape Park is emphasized by upgrading the accompanying vegetation, redesigning motorway junctions and emphasizing the design of the beginning and end of the park motorway.

On the occasion of the European Capital of Culture, the State Office for Road Construction ( Straßen.NRW ) and the “Arbeitsgemeinschaft Parkautobahn A42” are using the renovation of the A42 motorway as an opportunity for redesign. Their aim is to combine the renewal of the motorway with creative ideas in order to make the industrial landscape of the Ruhr area perceptible in all its diversity. Since the beginning of 2010, unusual measures have been implemented along the route that address the Emscher Landscape Park and make it visible to the occupants of the up to 80,000 vehicles that drive daily on the A 42 between Duisburg and Dortmund.

The theme of the redesign of the A 42 is the integration of this traffic structure into an urban landscape. A new strategy that better combines aesthetics, ecology and safety has been developed for the greenery along the road , for example .

Measures in detail

Design of the accompanying vegetation / guide tree

Between the trees and bushes of the greenery along the road, viewing windows are exposed in suitable places, which allow a view of the attractions in the Emscher Landscape Park along the route. The defining landscape elements include important landmarks such as the tetrahedron in Bottrop , the Oberhausen gasometer and the Duisburg-Nord landscape park . These are located directly on the route and are therefore one of the characteristic features of the A42 car park. In particular, the conscious perception of the diverse Emscher landscape park, which stretches from Dortmund to Duisburg, by the motorists on the A 42 should be made possible with the development of the park highway.

According to the specifications of a design concept, Straßen.NRW thinned out the dense stands of wood in order to create a certain "park character". This is followed by the phase of targeted planting with a type of tree that is intended to give the park highway an individual face. The new "lead tree" of the A 42 is the primeval sequoia , which will be planted in the spring of 2010 in around 1,000 copies on the park highway. In 2009 it was chosen from various proposed tree species with 83% of the votes from more than 7,000 participants through an online vote.

Ear parks

In the course of time, so-called “ear parks” will emerge in the “clover leaves”, the inner surfaces of the five motorway junctions on the A 42. These are designed for the passing user of the parking lot and are not accessible. The Castrop-Rauxel-Ost motorway junction was the first to be redesigned to become the cultural capital of RUHR.2010 . After clearing the contained vegetation, the inner surfaces of the up and down loops, the so-called "ears", were equipped with park-like plants. The planting plan is based on the perception possibilities of the passing motorway user.

Entrances east and west

In addition to the maintenance measures in the accompanying green along the route, the beginning and end of the park highway should be clearly marked. The landscape architecture offices Planergruppe Oberhausen and Foundation 5+ Kassel have developed a design idea for the “entrances to the motorway junctions Kamp-Lintfort in the west and Castrop-Rauxel in the east” from the accompanying vegetation and the topic of “Leitbaum”.

Park gates and information stations

The Gelsenkirchen-Schalke and Bottrop-Süd junctions will be the first up and down roads on the Park Autobahn to be redesigned in a special way with landscape architecture measures. At the Park + Ride car parks at these exits, simple information stations with steles will be set up to provide information about the Emscher Landscape Park and the park highway. The parking spaces should serve as access points to the Emscher Landscape Park and starting point for further activities. At the same time, a Metrorad bicycle station was set up at the Bottrop-Süd car park.

Project progress

The starting point for the project was an idea that was developed in 2004 by the two landscape architecture offices Planergruppe Oberhausen and Foundation 5+ Kassel as part of the development of the Emscher Landscape Park 2010 master plan. The project was selected as the official project of the European Capital of Culture 2010. In December 2007 the working group Parkautobahn was established consisting of the neighboring towns, Straßen.NRW, the RVR, the working group Neues Emschertal and the RUHR.2010. The environment and the NRW Ministry of Construction also took part. The city of Bottrop took on the lead.

For better organizational processing, the working group has decided to set up a steering group in which representatives from Straßen.NRW, RVR, RUHR.2010 and the ministries as well as the two planning offices try to solve any problems that arise and to inform everyone involved coordinate.

Feasibility study

On the basis of an offer, the working group commissioned the two planning offices in December 2007 to prepare a feasibility study for the parking lot. The costs of € 40,000 were paid by all participating cities and institutions. The results of the feasibility study were presented to the working group in April 2008 and form the basis for the further development of the project. In the feasibility study, the individual building blocks of the project were defined and the total scope of all possible measures in the next decades outlined and a rough total cost estimate created.

In the context of the renovation and renewal of the A 42, the MUNLV NRW concluded a contractual agreement with Straßen.NRW in summer 2008 to regulate the special aspects of converting the vegetation accompanying the park highway. On the basis of this contract, Straßen.NRW commissioned the two offices in November 2008 to plan the conversion of the accompanying vegetation. The planning was coordinated with the AG Parkautobahn. The first construction work to convert the "green line" took place in autumn / winter 2008.

Workshop procedure

In addition to this "basic design", two workshop procedures were carried out for particularly important components of the parking lot in order to select design solutions. The first workshop procedure was carried out in the summer of 2008 for the design of the "ear parks" at the A 42 motorway intersections. In October 2008 the contribution of the GTL office from Kassel / Düsseldorf was selected. The workshop process was financed from funds from the Ecology Program in the Emscher-Lippe Area (ÖPEL) with corresponding own contributions from members of the AG Parkautobahn.

A second workshop procedure for “structural signs and information stations” on the parking lot took place in January 2009. In terms of content, it was about the kick-off signs, landscape windows and parking stations. The proposal of the Latz + Partner / Integral ruedi baur / LDE Belzner Holmes working group was selected. This procedure was financed from urban development funds via the North Rhine-Westphalia Ministry of Construction with corresponding own contributions from members of the AG Parkautobahn. In the course of 2009, however, it became clear that due to the extremely poor budget situation of the municipalities, it will not be possible to implement these structural measures in the foreseeable future.

In 2009 the first clearing and clearing of the vegetation was carried out along the highway. In the Capital of Culture year, the replanting of the guide trees, the construction of the Castrop-Rauxel ear park, the east and west entrances and the information stations will all be realized. RUHR.2010 has taken over the project sponsorship for some of these measures. Financing comes from funds from the Emscher Lippe Ecology Program, EU funds and funds from MUNLV NRW .

The project started as part of the RUHR.2010 Capital of Culture year, but is primarily geared towards the future and will gradually be fully implemented over the next 20 years.
