Life

Choi Hee-seo was born on January 7, 1987 in the South Korean capital Seoul , but spent her childhood in the Japanese city of Osaka , where she attended a Korean elementary school. There she came into contact with acting through a school theater appearance. She attended middle school and high school in the United States . She then returned to Seoul, where she studied mass communication and Italian language at Yonsei University . At that time she was a member of the university's drama club. In 2008 she completed a semester abroad at the University of California at Berkeley in the field of performing arts .

She returned to South Korea and received her first role in the sports film Lifting Kingkong in 2009 . Then she first played in a few short films, independent productions and in a few television series. She also tried her hand at directing short films and staging her own play, but could hardly attract any attention. One day, film director, screenwriter and producer Shin Yeon-shik allegedly discovered her on the subway. He noticed how she read scripts on the subway every day. One day he asked Choi to send him her résumé. When he saw that she was fluent in Japanese , he recommended her to director Lee Joon-ik for the role of Japanese in their next film, Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet . She left a lasting impression, which is why Lee hired her for the role of Fumiko Kaneko in Anarchist from Colony (2017). She received eleven prizes for this, including the Daejong Film Prize in two categories: Best Actress and Best Young Actress .

Bong Joon-ho also became aware of her through Dongju and gave her a supporting role in Okja (2017) as a translator. In 2018 she starred in Our Body by Han Ka-ram , which premiered at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival . Furthermore, in honor of the 100th anniversary of Korean film , Han Ka-ram shot a short film for the series 100X100 entitled Yeoldaseot Hogeun ( 열 다섯 혹은 ), in which Choi also plays the leading role. She also appears in Lee Joon-ik's short film Chumo ( 추모 ).
