Khalid Al-Maaly

Khalid Al-Maaly ( Arabic خالد المعالي Chalid al-Maʿali , DMG Ḫālid al-Maʿālī ; * April 15, 1956 in as-Samawa , Iraq ) is a German writer .

Life

Khalid Al-Maaly comes from a Bedouin family from Iraq. In 1978 he passed the matriculation examination; In 1979, after Saddam Hussein came to power, he left the country and fled to France via Lebanon . In 1980 he applied for political asylum in the Federal Republic of Germany ; In 1983 he was recognized as a political refugee ; he has been a German citizen since 1996 . Al-Maaly now lives in Beirut , having previously lived in Cologne for a long time , where he runs the Al-Kamel publishing house he founded and publishes the Arabic literary magazine Uyoun . The publisher also has offices in Beirut and Baghdad .

Al-Maaly had already published poems in various Arabic literary magazines in the 1970s ; his first volume of poetry in Arabic was published in 1978. Today he writes poetry and prose in both German and Arabic. He also works as a translator from German into Arabic and from Arabic into German.

Khalid Al-Maaly is a member of the Association of German Writers . He received u. a. In 1988 the Rolf Dieter Brinkmann grant , in 1990 the sponsorship award from the State of North Rhine-Westphalia and in 1995 a grant from the artist village of Schöppingen .
