Body and (social) space form the central aspect in her work. A review of generally accepted expectations of feminine and gender clichés takes place in video performances, video and sound installations and photo works. Sometimes objects from everyday life are also included in the form-finding process of their work in a ready-made manner. Freya Hattenberger is particularly interested in questions of the representation of femininity in relation to gender-specific forms of behavior and questions of autonomy .

However, "Freya Hattenberger does not only negotiate the question of femininity in the context of artistic creation, she does not stop at gender-theoretical questions and feminist criticisms, but suggests a transferability to existential questions and generally applicable dimensions of meaning." (Deborah Bürgel). The performative, often autobiographical elements deliberately provide a surface for irritation, a subtle irony seeks to undo ingrained perceptual patterns.

With Peter C. Simon , Freya Hattenberger is a founding member of the band "Les Éclairs". Their approach is to understand the process of sound generation as a performance , instead of giving a "normal" concert. In evocative actions, her music appears like a trip through broken sound images, noisy soundscapes , accompanied by the sometimes dreamy, sometimes scary sounding use of human voices.

During their performances, on-site improvisations merge with previously arranged chords. Electronics, everyday objects and things found on the way are also used as instruments. By looping and superimposing acoustic events, “Les Éclairs” explore the poetry of the moment on the verge of feedback and distortion. Every performance by “Les Éclairs” is a situationist reflection on the context of the performance.
