Ernst Josef Althoff (born January 28, 1928 in Krefeld ; † July 20, 2016 there ) was a German architect and designer . From 1963 to 1993 he taught architecture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Life

Althoff grew up as the son of the master carpenter Johannes Althoff in Krefeld. To avoid marching in the Hitler Youth , he attended a model making course offered by an elementary school teacher. There he built model airplanes. After school he trained as a carpenter with his father. From 1944 to 1948 he studied architecture and interior design at the master school for the creative craft , the later Werkkunstschule Krefeld. He then deepened these subjects at the Düsseldorf Art Academy under Hans Schwippert , who accepted him into his class in 1950 on the recommendation of Stephan Hirzel (1899–1970), the brief director of the Krefeld master school. In 1955 he began working as a freelance architect. The studio that Althoff had moved into in 1956 at Mittelstrasse 33 in Krefeld was a center for professional discussions on the subject of “wood” as well as cultural-political-philosophical discussions, in which, in addition to the sculptor Joseph Beuys and the poet Adam Rainer Lynen (* 1923) other guests attended, such as the artists Rolf Crummenauer , Holger Runge and Hans Ostendorf as well as the writers Franz Schonauer and Heinar Kipphardt . Appointed by Schwippert as a lecturer at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1963, he taught the architecture class there until 1993 , and since 1972 as a professor. Ulrike Zilly was a master student of Althoff . In 1979 he formed a studio community with Niklaus Fritschi , another former student.

In addition to his own house, Althoff mainly designed exhibition architecture, such as contributions for the German Pavilion at the World Exhibitions in Brussels in 1958 and Montreal in 1967 , various pieces of furniture (individual and series furniture, including a bed made of oak and steel for Joseph Beuys), wooden structures and objects, and jewelry . In 1963 he received the sponsorship award of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for young artists . In the 1970s he got involved with Roland Günter , Fritschi and others for the preservation of the Eisenheim estate in Oberhausen . In 2010 the Art Academy Düsseldorf made Althoff an honorary member. Althoff was a member of the German Association of Artists .
