In his non-representational painting and with his photographic works, Gerwers examines questions of the viewer's perception and reassurance in space, furthermore, in the paintings, of the juxtaposition of color surfaces and graphically linear structures. After experimentally open, sometimes organic-looking painterly formulations from the late 1980s until the mid-1990s, a grid of different colored lines lay over a monochrome light-colored background. In other groups of works that started later, the lines retreat to the edge of the picture as narrow strips. Since the mid-1990s in particular, larger monochrome surfaces have been used that are subdivided or closed off by individual vertical stripes of color, and horizontal lines at the bottom or top of the picture with which the verticals intersect. As a result of masking or sanding down the colored lines, the impression of shadow gaps is created . The paintings act as an organic material counterpart.

Since the end of the 1980s, the "photo sandwiches" have also been created, in which the art objects are cut out of mostly own photographs of museum rooms and the studio and other things, evoking empty spaces or a reflective nesting of the space .
