Life

Edgar Augustin completed an apprenticeship as a goldsmith and studied from 1958 at the Werkkunstschule Münster under Karl Ehlers . In 1960 he moved to the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg , where Gustav Seitz taught him. From the beginning of his studies at the Hamburg University he lived in Hamburg-Duvenstedt and from 1981 in Jersbek .

Works

Edgar Augustin used a wide repertoire of motifs. He created standing nudes, figures in various shapes, busts and scenes from studios and sports. Many of his works shape the cityscape of Hamburg. Well-known figures include Die Große Liegende am Stephansplatz , created in 1977, and the rugby players in Hamburg-Neustadt from 1970. Augustin wrapped them in damp cloths for his clay works. This resulted in sculptures that appear extremely calm, but sometimes tied up like mummies. Augustine also worked with wood. He attached flat blocks and plates over a wooden core. This type of clearly visible use of dowels resulted in works of art that are reminiscent of mosaics. Augustin recorded the creation of the works, which managed without mechanical engineering, in drawings he called construction sketches. At the beginning of the 1990s, the artist also made women's heads, which he knocked straight out of wooden blocks.

Augustin had a talent for painting and created many graphics and paintings. He dealt with topics similar to those in sculpture. The faces of the people depicted, which are often reminiscent of statues, are often shaded or shown only in greatly simplified form. Augustine mostly used white-gray colors.

Awards

Augustin, who had received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation at the age of 28 , won numerous prizes. In 1965 he won the first prize for sculpture from the Westfälischer Kunstverein Münster and the sponsorship prize of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for young artists . In 1967/68 he received a scholarship which he used to spend a year at the Villa Massimo in Rome and study ancient sculptures. In 1975 Augustin was awarded the Edwin Scharff Prize , and in 1984 he won the Hakone Open Air Museum Prize for Sculpture .
