Elmar Schossig (born June 28, 1950 in Chemnitz ; † December 15, 2009 ) was a German architect , designer and photographer.

life and work

After studying architecture at the Technical University of Braunschweig and RWTH Aachen University , he and his future wife, Professor Dörte Gatermann, founded the joint architecture office Gatermann + Schossig in Cologne in 1984 , which is now run by Dörte Gatermann and her long-term project managers. The work of the office achieved around 150 architecture and competition awards. The couple have two grown children. Elmar Schossig died on December 15, 2009 after a long illness.

The encounter with the work of Richard Buckminster Fuller in Chicago in 1972 gave the impetus for Elmar Schossig's later occupation with the questions of ecology , sustainable architecture and energy efficiency . In addition to aesthetic and technical aspects, the architect's design activity was characterized by the ecological-resource-optimizing approach. In this border area between architecture and technology, he received various awards, especially for facade developments.

In addition to architecture, Elmar Schossig has been concentrating more and more on the areas of product development and product design since 1985. He passed on his experience in workshops and lectures and as the author of many publications. Since 2005, the year he began to develop incurable cancer, he devoted himself even more to product design and photography. His first photo book "On the way - a photographic novella" was published at the end of 2006. Under the title "Raumbilder - Bildzimmer" a group exhibition with his pictures took place in Munich, Stuttgart and Düsseldorf in 2009/2010. His last exhibition "Colors and Shapes in the Square", on which he worked until shortly before his death, was opened posthumously in Cologne.
