Michael Oppitz (born August 20, 1942 in Arnsdorf , Lower Silesia Province ) is a German ethnologist . Until his retirement he was a professor at the University of Zurich and head of the Zurich Ethnographic Museum.

Life

Michael Oppitz became known worldwide through his field research in the field of shamanism .

He traveled to Nepal for the first time in 1965 , where he spent seven years exploring the small hill tribe of the northern Magar in the 1970s . This resulted in the almost four-hour film Shamans in the Blind Land (1980) and the "picture book" of the same name (1981).

It was not until the age of 50 that the traveling ethnographer became “settled” himself: in Zurich as professor for ethnology and as head of the ethnographic museum affiliated with the university .
