Hans Jakob Wehrli (born July 2, 1871 in Zurich ; † February 26, 1945 there ) was a Swiss geographer and ethnologist .

Life

Wehrli studied geography at the universities of Leipzig and Zurich from 1898 to 1903 . He received his doctorate in 1904 under Otto Stoll in Zurich on the ethnology of the Jingpo of Upper Burma . In 1907 he received his habilitation in Zurich. From 1911 he was associate professor and from 1913 to 1940 full professor of geography and ethnology at the University of Zurich. From 1911 to 1941 he was director of the Institute of Geography and the Ethnographic Collection .

Among other things, Wehrli researched the economic and settlement geography of Upper Burma and the northern Shan states .
