The Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc is a historic hotel on Cap d'Antibes on the Côte d'Azur in France .

history

The "Villa Soleil", the original name of the house, was completed in 1863 as a private residence and refuge for writers under the leadership of Auguste de Villemessant, founder of the daily Le Figaro . A consortium of local French businessmen and Russian aristocrats, including Counts Plestcheyeff and Stroganow and Prince Soltykoff, paid for the construction costs of 636,121.62 francs (about 130,000 US dollars) .

In February 1870 the house opened its doors as a hotel. The official opening ceremony took place on February 26, 1870. The success as a hotel did not want to set in at first. After several changes of ownership, the Italian hotelier Antoine Sella bought the partly dilapidated hotel in October 1887. He had repairs and renovations carried out that were long overdue. In January 1889, the Hotel du Cap reopened its doors. The innovative hotelier managed to bring international high society to his hotel in Cap d'Antibes. Well-known guests of the hotel were, among others, Ernest Hemingway , Marlene Dietrich , Pablo Picasso , Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson , who later became Duchess of Windsor, as well as F. Scott Fitzgerald , who called the hotel “Hotel des Étrangers” in his novel Tender is the Night “Immortalized and Johannes Mario Simmel , who mentions the hotel in his novel The answer only knows the wind .

In 1914 the Eden Roc Pavilion was built on the cliffs at the lower end of the main axis of the 9.1 hectare park. At the same time, a seawater swimming pool was blasted into the basalt in the immediate vicinity of the pavilion . Since then, the Hotel du Cap and the Eden Roc Pavilion have formed a unit, which is reflected in the name of the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc.

In 1969 Rudolf-August Oetker bought the hotel from André Sella. Cäsar Pinnau was founded in 1974 with extension and Interior works commissioned. The Hotel du Cap Eden Roc has been run by Philippe Perd since 2005. In 2012 it was integrated into the Oetker Collection (OHC), Oetker Hotel Management .

The Swiss business magazine Bilanz named the Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc the best holiday hotel in the world in 2018.
