The central post office in Dili
There was already a postal service and postage stamps for Portuguese Timor in the Portuguese colonial times . After the invasion and annexation of East Timor by Indonesia in 1975, the regular Indonesian postage stamps were used.
In April 2000, the independent postal service for East Timor began under UN administration . The country gained independence on May 20, 2002. In the same year the CTL became a member of the Associação internacional das communicações de expressão portuguesa (AICEP) and on November 28, 2003 a member of the Universal Postal Union . On June 8, 2010, the new main post office and headquarters of CLT in was Dilis district Quintal Qik opened.
