Íslandspóstur ohf. or Pósturinn is the Icelandic national postal service. It was founded in 1776 by Christian VII , the king of Denmark and Norway and with it Iceland.
history
Two years after it was founded, the first “regular” mail ships ran between Denmark and Iceland - one a year. The first Icelandic postage stamps were printed in 1873. In the same year, the post was placed under its own administration and better organized nationwide. The first post offices were also established in the larger Icelandic communities.
In 1935 the post office and the national telephone company were merged and then appeared under the name Póstur og sími ( post and telephone ). This connection was only canceled in 1998 and the two companies became independent again as Íslandspóstur and Síminn .
With 1200 employees, Íslandspóstur is one of the largest employers in the country. A further expansion of the distribution network is planned, so more post offices are to be built to improve the supply.
