Síminn ( Icelandic Das Telefon ), formerly also known as Landssíminn , is a former state-owned Icelandic telecommunications company. Among other things, it operates a cell phone network and a television station ( Skjár 1 ).

The company was originally founded in 1906. On July 28, 2005, Skipti bought it for 66.7 billion ISK (around 720 million euros). In December 2005, the three companies Skipti, Síminn and Íslenska sjónvarpsfélagið (German: The Icelandic television company ) were merged under the name Síminn . After privatization, the company went public and is now part of the OMX Iceland 8 index.

history

In 1906 the following important events for Iceland's telephone system took place: The east-west telephone line Seyðisfjörður - Reykjavík went into operation, which was honored in 2002 as the most outstanding Icelandic engineering achievement of the decade 1901–1910, Iceland was connected to other countries by telephone through an undersea line Shetland - Faroe Islands –Seyðisfjörður, and Landssími Íslands was founded by the Icelandic government. There was resistance to this new technology from the population, but Prime Minister Hannes Hafstein was able to get his message across.

Complete landline coverage of Iceland was only achieved 54 years later.

In 1935 the company was merged with the Icelandic Post Office, resulting in Póstur og Sími . This connection was separated again in 1998 in the postal company Íslandspóstur and the telecommunications provider Landssími Íslands . The name was eventually changed to Síminn because of the greater customer friendliness .

Síminn put its UMTS network into operation in autumn 2007, making it the first UMTS network operator in Iceland. The network was initially limited to the greater Reykjavík area and was expanded over time in the other more densely populated areas.

competition

Síminn has always been the largest player in the Icelandic telephone and internet market. Until a few years ago, the company had a monopoly at all. In recent years, the company has faced more and more competition on the telephone market, for example from TAL or Íslandssími. Alternative internet providers such as Íslandssími, Halló! or Margmiðlun to enter the market. In 2003, TAL, Íslandssími and Halló finally merged! under the name OgVodafone, which became Vodafone Iceland in 2006 .

Since the opening of the market for alternative providers, prices have fallen significantly, especially for mobile phone and Internet services.
