history
For a long time, the Post's only activity was the transport of mail between Finland and Sweden. The first post offices were opened in Kastelholm and Eckerö . In 1866 a post office was built in Mariehamn . In 1809 the postal system was taken over by the Russian Empire, then by the Grand Duchy of Finland.
Many of the post offices opened in the early 20th century. The Republic of Finland finally took over the postal service in 1917.
Åland did not receive its own postage stamps until 1984, which were issued until December 31, 1992 in collaboration with the Finnish Post Office. On January 1, 1993, the Åland Authority took over the postal service and the post office came under the government of the islands.
