history
Eckerö was first mentioned around 1320 as Ækro ; the first part of the place name is probably to be understood as a variant of Swedish åker , field, ö is the Swedish word for island.
Just like Vårdö in the east of mainland Åland, Eckerö in the west was an important transit station for the Turku - Stockholm postal route . The splendid post and customs house near Berghamn harbor, designed by Carl Ludwig Engel in 1828, from where the post boats left Åland for Stockholm, is a testament to the importance of postal traffic for the municipality . In addition to the post house mentioned above, the parish's sights include the stone church from around 1400, whose small bell is the oldest church bell in Finland.
