[ ˈtɕøːkar ] is amunicipalityin the autonomousFinnish province(Finnish:Lääni)Åland. Kökar has 236 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018), around 95 percent of whom areSwedish-speaking, and an area of 63.94 square kilometers, of which 0.39 square kilometers are inland water. As in all of Åland,Swedish isthe official language.
Parish name
The municipality name appears for the first time in a text by Danish sailors of the 13th century. At that time, the Franciscan monastery on Kökar, which belonged to the Dacia order province, probably already existed . The name was written as Thiyckækarl , which could refer to the fat islanders.
traffic
Kökar can be reached with the Ålandstrafik ferry, which runs from Galtby (on Korpo ) to Långnäs (on Lumparland ).
Attractions
- St. Anna Church was built in 1784 on the place of the Franciscan monastery . There is a museum in connection with the church.
- Otterböte is a Bronze Age settlement . It was discovered in 1918.
- Källskär is a small island and well-known attraction south of Kökar.

Personalities
The writer Ulla-Lena Lundberg was born on Kökar in 1947, her novel Is (German: Eis ) is set on the island (which is called Örar in the book).
